MARK OF THE THIEF release day! Jennifer Nielsen February 24, 2015

MARK OF THE THIEF release day!

Guys, it’s today! MARK OF THE THIEF launches into the world and I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! Let me share two final quotes from this book, which show how Nic begins to change his perception of himself.

Slide3

The first is shortly after he gets magic and something he is told by his master, Felix:

I’m nobody. Just a slave—”

“A slave who happens to be holding the most powerful magic the empire has seen since the days of Julius Caesar! And you’re right, Nic. You are nobody to this land. No one will fight a war to save you. No one will care if you fall. And if the enemies of this land surround you, even with that bulla, you will have no chance against them on your own.”

And then a few days later, after Nic and Aurelia escape an attack from General Radulf:

My mouth literally fell open. Either she was evil or completely insane because I was pretty sure I had just proven how difficult it would be to force me to do anything. That said, when I stood, my legs were wobbly and Aurelia came closer to assist me. Before she could, I locked my knees and turned away. Every time she helped me, my situation got worse, which was no small accomplishment since it had started out pretty close to the bottom.

“You walk like you have two broken legs,” Aurelia said. “How are you going to run from me if you can’t walk?”

“I’m not going to run,” I said. “But I won’t obey you either. I’ll never have a master again.”

As I said, I so hope you will all love this book as much as I do!

So where can you buy it? If you have an indie bookstore nearby, that’s the place to start. If you don’t, and you want a signed copy, you can order it from The King’s English Bookshop. When you’re almost ready to checkout, there’s a space for Notes. That’s where you can write who you want the book personalized to. I’ll sign it and they’ll ship it.

If you’d rather order your copy online, here are other options:

Indiebound

Barnes and Noble

Amazon

Audible

And, as a completely unrelated note, but because I know you’ll ask, no sorry, I have no movie news yet. Fingers remain crossed though!

Yay! Mark of the Thief in the world! Those quotes were very cool and interesting. Felix sounds like Mott in the False Prince.
Happy Mark of the Thief release day!

    Hi!!!!!!!!!!
I got the book on my Kindle this morning, and I have badly stopped reading it. In science class I literally was reading under my desk. I’m on chapter 15, and it is SO good!!!!!! I’m seriously reading right now while I’m typing this. Hopefully I won’t get in trouble, I mean, I’m reading, right?
I’ll probably be finished with this by the time I get home from school, so I’ll probably comment again.
I have to start reading again though, so bye. 😀 😀 😀 😀

SO EXCITED TO READ IT!!!! 😀 Also, I have two quick questions (and I’m terribly sorry if they’ve already been answered and I didn’t see them): one, will the book be in-store at Barnes and Noble, or is in-store availability limited to indie bookstores? And two, has the book trailer been released yet? Thanks!

Celine, the book will definitely be at Barnes & Noble. If they don’t have the book out yet, just ask for a copy and they should have it. And the book trailer isn’t quite ready yet, but I hope to release it soon!

Okay, great! Thank you; I was going to get it when I go home this weekend from college, but when I only saw indie booksellers mentioned in the blog for a hard copy, I suddenly got nervous that I’d walk in and not find it, which would REALLY have been a downer. And I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the trailer! Can’t wait!! (Also, thank you so much for responding to all of your comments; that’s so awesome!!)

I am going to Utah this summer, and am visiting Salt Lake City for three days. I know this is a totally random question, but me (and my mom) were wondering what there is to do there. Can you give any suggestions? I know you live in Northern Utah, so do you have any suggestions?
(We are also going camping/white water rafting on the Yampa River.)

Three days, huh? Well Kate, I’m not sure what you like, or your age or interests, but some things to look at right in SLC are: Temple Square Tour, the Ensign Peak hike, shopping at City Creek, Hogle Zoo, Clark Planetarium, and Seven Peaks Waterpark. There’s a new aquarium in the southern part of the city that’s supposed to be pretty good, though I haven’t been there. You can take a day trip up to Park City which has a lot of fun opportunities, or go into the canyons for hiking, or down to the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point, which isn’t too far from SLC. I hope you have a great time!

After school today I immediately begged my mom to go to the bookstore to buy it!! Funny thing (and a but disappointing, and sad at the same time): I was searching everywhere for it on the “New Arrivals” shelves and anything labeled similar, but I could’t find it. Then we asked the Customer Service desk and there was a pile of Mark of the Thief just sitting there on the bookshelf, looking like they were waiting to be picked up and read. I thought why they couldn’t display them on the “New Arrivals” stand, and they’d have a better chance of being picked up if they were there in the front of the store.
Anyway, the book so far is great! I’m on Chapter 13, and I can’t wait to finish it, but at the same time I don’t because then I have to wait for the next book to come out…
Keep up the great work! I look forwards to the next one already! 😀

Yay! I picked up my copy from my local book store yesterday afternoon, and was up for ages finishing it! It’s wonderful! I do have a couple questions though. First, what color are Aurelia’s eyes? I believe Nic talked about them two or three times, but he never specified exactly what color they were, unless my tired eyes just weren’t in the mood for telling me. Second, are we ever going to learn the little African girl’s name? Since he asked her, and she never gave it to him, my curiosity decided to be cruel to me and force me to wonder. Third, this doesn’t really have to do with the book, but might you ever be interested in coming on a visit to southern California? I’ve been checking your schedule every time you post one on here, but I’ve never been able to reach one of your visits. 🙁 By the way, any movie news? I’ve got my fingers crossed! Thanks for the stories, Jennifer!

      Aurelia’s eyes are dark blue.

The African girl’s name is Mereyet.

And yes, I would love to come out to Southern California! All I need is an invite from someone willing to host me.

No movie news yet. Soon, I hope!

Well, believe it or not, I never really know. I get royalty statements twice a year telling me how many were sold in that six-month period, but I’d have an easier time deciphering Chinese. If my editor is happy, then I’m happy. Mrs Nielsen –
My sister’s copy of Mark of the Thief arrived yesterday from the King’s English Bookshop autographed. She was so utterly thrilled. She let me read it after she was done.
I ashamed to admit I wasn’t expecting much. When I get my hopes up too high, then when I read the book, it turns out to be the worst book ever.
You are officially my favorite author.
THAT BOOK IS AWESOME. THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT. IT IS FANTASTIC.
It was so amazing! I’m already waiting until the next book comes out.
I felt I could connect with Aurelia, and Nic seemed to be a bit like Sage – when he gets angry, especially.
If A Night Divided is so captivating, you are going to be the BEST author ever.

    Mrs. Nielsen~
I got your book at my book fair two days ago (after anxiously awaiting the arrival of your book) and finished reading it yesterday. I absolutely, most definitely love your book with all my heart. I can sheepishly admit that I kind of read it, like, two times already and can’t stop reading it. The characters are so beautifully structured and they make so much sense, I can relate so well to their feelings. I could never write something as amazing as you do. Every time I sit at the computer to write, I always get stumped. Thankfully, I have your book to help me through my writing process. I’d also like to comment on how fast you get out your books to please your readers and fans. The books come out fast but still contain the quality writing and adventure I look for when I’m searching for a book.
In the Ascendance Trilogy, I love how all the books are really good, not just the first book of the series. That’s what usually happens to all the series I read, the first book is amazing and the other ones are just space fillers. These were all linked together with this beautiful golden thread of adventure and spirit and well planned out plots.
What I’m really trying to say is that you, Mrs. Nielsen, are one of the best writers ever to walk this earth. I know that’s kind of cheesy and sort of seem just like words on a screen some silly fan wrote, but I really, truly and honestly mean it.
Thank you for sharing your writing with the world,
    ~Samantha

My daughter is 8 years old and by accident, she picked a book based on the cover that had a wolf on it. She was engrossed with the Wolfblood series, so wanted to find something similar. Well, we grabbed it and didn’t realize it was the second book of your series and was supposedly way above her reading level. I had to beg her teacher to do a litmus year and allow her to be tested, which she scored 100%. Thank you for giving her a spark to consume the series that encouraged her a desire to read.

One day I was talking about some good books with a friend, and she put the first book of Mark of the Thief in my hands. I had never even heard of it before. Because I was reading another book, I didn’t really want to read it, but since she was so kind as to let me borrow it, I started reading it. It was incredible. I loved this trilogy so much, and I love your writing. I want to read The False Prince next. Thank you so much for this wonderful journey, and I am excited about any future books that you might write. I also think it’s great how kindly you respond to all of your fans.
