MARK OF THE THIEF release day!

Posted by on Feb 24, 2015 in Uncategorized | 88 comments

Guys, it’s today! MARK OF THE THIEF launches into the world and I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! Let me share two final quotes from this book, which show how Nic begins to change his perception of himself.

The first is shortly after he gets magic and something he is told by his master, Felix:

I’m nobody. Just a slave—”

“A slave who happens to be holding the most powerful magic the empire has seen since the days of Julius Caesar! And you’re right, Nic. You are nobody to this land. No one will fight a war to save you. No one will care if you fall. And if the enemies of this land surround you, even with that bulla, you will have no chance against them on your own.”

And then a few days later, after Nic and Aurelia escape an attack from General Radulf:

My mouth literally fell open. Either she was evil or completely insane because I was pretty sure I had just proven how difficult it would be to force me to do anything. That said, when I stood, my legs were wobbly and Aurelia came closer to assist me. Before she could, I locked my knees and turned away. Every time she helped me, my situation got worse, which was no small accomplishment since it had started out pretty close to the bottom.

“You walk like you have two broken legs,” Aurelia said. “How are you going to run from me if you can’t walk?”

“I’m not going to run,” I said. “But I won’t obey you either. I’ll never have a master again.”

As I said, I so hope you will all love this book as much as I do!

So where can you buy it? If you have an indie bookstore nearby, that’s the place to start. If you don’t, and you want a signed copy, you can order it from The King’s English Bookshop. When you’re almost ready to checkout, there’s a space for Notes. That’s where you can write who you want the book personalized to. I’ll sign it and they’ll ship it.

If you’d rather order your copy online, here are other options:

Barnes and Noble

And, as a completely unrelated note, but because I know you’ll ask, no sorry, I have no movie news yet. Fingers remain crossed though!

  1. Yay! Mark of the Thief in the world! Those quotes were very cool and interesting. Felix sounds like Mott in the False Prince.
Happy Mark of the Thief release day!
    – Loreley

    • Well, Felix is quite different actually, but I hope you will enjoy it when you get the chance to read it!

      • Please tell me there will be a sequel?

        • Tyler, there will be two more books in the series. The second book should be out next February and it’s going to be epic!

          • Yay

          • Thanks very much, Kate (and yes, only three books)!

    • I totally thought that the make of a theif would be like another book of the false prince but…….. Too bad so sad! I didn’t get another lovely book about the insane king!

      • Oh and by the way it’s really awesome how you reply to your fans! I’ve read sooo many books and seen sooo many western, this is the first one where the author really talks to the people!! U R AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Thank you. Yes, I think if someone takes the trouble should write me, it’s only fair to take the time to reply. 😉

      • I’m sorry it wasn’t what you were expecting, Usontnomeinou.

  2. Hi!!!!!!!!!!
I got the book on my Kindle this morning, and I have badly stopped reading it. In science class I literally was reading under my desk. I’m on chapter 15, and it is SO good!!!!!! I’m seriously reading right now while I’m typing this. Hopefully I won’t get in trouble, I mean, I’m reading, right?
I’ll probably be finished with this by the time I get home from school, so I’ll probably comment again.
I have to start reading again though, so bye. 😀 😀 😀 😀

    • Ha! Tori, your posts always make me smile. No, I totally think you should never get in trouble for reading. But your teachers might disagree! I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

  3. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I’m so excited, it sounds so good! I can’t wait until my copy arrives in the post 🙂

  4. SO EXCITED TO READ IT!!!! 😀 Also, I have two quick questions (and I’m terribly sorry if they’ve already been answered and I didn’t see them): one, will the book be in-store at Barnes and Noble, or is in-store availability limited to indie bookstores? And two, has the book trailer been released yet? Thanks!

    • Celine, the book will definitely be at Barnes & Noble. If they don’t have the book out yet, just ask for a copy and they should have it. And the book trailer isn’t quite ready yet, but I hope to release it soon!

      • Okay, great! Thank you; I was going to get it when I go home this weekend from college, but when I only saw indie booksellers mentioned in the blog for a hard copy, I suddenly got nervous that I’d walk in and not find it, which would REALLY have been a downer. And I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the trailer! Can’t wait!! (Also, thank you so much for responding to all of your comments; that’s so awesome!!)

  5. It’s scheduled to come at 8 o’ clock PM tonight. 5 more hours. Just 5 more hours…

  6. Yay! So excited for you. I loved this story. It’s as great as The False Prince. And my ARC giveaway contest was very popular. Can’t wait for your new book to come out too.

    • Natalie, I want to make sure you get an ARC of A Night Divided. Thank you so very much!

  7. Oh my gosh I cannot wait to read it!!!

  8. When is the paramount meeting to discuss the movie?

  9. Yes!the day is finally here I have been so excited waiting for this date to come. I have been celebrating like I’m about to read it now but unfortunately I can’t get it until Saturday. I’m so glad I have another book to read I usually read them within a day or two so I tend to run out of things to read congratulations on the new book release I can’t wait to read it! 😀

    • Waiting until Saturday isn’t too bad. But I do hope you’ll enjoy it once you get a chance to read it! Thank you, Marissa!

  10. How much would a copy cost if I bought is from Barnes and Noble?

    • The list price is $17.99, so it would be that plus whatever tax applies in your area.

      • Okay! Thanks. I have enough.

  11. Congrats! I love how you keep posting quotes from MOTT. Will you do the same as the Night Divided release date draws nearer? Thank you so much! So excited for MOTT and Night Divided!

    • I think I probably will do the same for A Night Divided. I think it’s a fun way to get readers excited about the books.

  12. So glad! I just got an email saying my copy came in, and I will be reading it as soon as I can! I’m sure it will be marvelous, and I’ll let you know just how much the second I get my hands on it. Thanks for every word you’ve ever written, Jennifer! You really are a remarkable author!

  13. I got the book the day it came out and finished it that day, it was amazing! Thank you for writing another wonderful story, Mrs. Nielson! 🙂

  14. I am going to Utah this summer, and am visiting Salt Lake City for three days. I know this is a totally random question, but me (and my mom) were wondering what there is to do there. Can you give any suggestions? I know you live in Northern Utah, so do you have any suggestions?
(We are also going camping/white water rafting on the Yampa River.)

    • Three days, huh? Well Kate, I’m not sure what you like, or your age or interests, but some things to look at right in SLC are: Temple Square Tour, the Ensign Peak hike, shopping at City Creek, Hogle Zoo, Clark Planetarium, and Seven Peaks Waterpark. There’s a new aquarium in the southern part of the city that’s supposed to be pretty good, though I haven’t been there. You can take a day trip up to Park City which has a lot of fun opportunities, or go into the canyons for hiking, or down to the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point, which isn’t too far from SLC. I hope you have a great time!

      • Thank you! Sounds like I will be busy!

  15. I just got this book today at my school’s book fair, and I wanted to say that it’s a really good book! Keep on writing because your style is great! 🙂

    • Thank you, John! I’ll definitely keep writing – so many wonderful stories are still out there waiting to be told!

  16. Congrats on Mark of the Thief coming out!!! It’s AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I literally did not put it down until I finished it, not even to eat or do homework. Now one of my friends is reading it. I always have a list of friends who want to read your books when they come out because I preorder them and get them the day they come out. Anyway, thanks for another awesome book!

    • That is fantastic, Danielle. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for passing the books on to your friends.

  17. My copy came in the post today and WOW it looks so beautiful and from the chapters I got read today it is one of the best books I’ve ever read!! Can’t wait to read more 🙂

  18. After school today I immediately begged my mom to go to the bookstore to buy it!! Funny thing (and a but disappointing, and sad at the same time): I was searching everywhere for it on the “New Arrivals” shelves and anything labeled similar, but I could’t find it. Then we asked the Customer Service desk and there was a pile of Mark of the Thief just sitting there on the bookshelf, looking like they were waiting to be picked up and read. I thought why they couldn’t display them on the “New Arrivals” stand, and they’d have a better chance of being picked up if they were there in the front of the store.
Anyway, the book so far is great! I’m on Chapter 13, and I can’t wait to finish it, but at the same time I don’t because then I have to wait for the next book to come out…
Keep up the great work! I look forwards to the next one already! 😀

    • Thank you, Annie. Sometimes it takes the stores a few days to get everything set out – especially if it’s on a day when there’s a lot of new releases. But I’m very glad you found a copy and even happier you’re enjoying it!

  19. Great Book! I have already read this book 3 times! I also loved the false prince and those other books, can you write some more books like that? Keep on writing theese great book jennifer!

    • Thanks so much, Tom! I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I’ll definitely keep writing other books!

  20. Yay! I picked up my copy from my local book store yesterday afternoon, and was up for ages finishing it! It’s wonderful! I do have a couple questions though. First, what color are Aurelia’s eyes? I believe Nic talked about them two or three times, but he never specified exactly what color they were, unless my tired eyes just weren’t in the mood for telling me. Second, are we ever going to learn the little African girl’s name? Since he asked her, and she never gave it to him, my curiosity decided to be cruel to me and force me to wonder. Third, this doesn’t really have to do with the book, but might you ever be interested in coming on a visit to southern California? I’ve been checking your schedule every time you post one on here, but I’ve never been able to reach one of your visits. 🙁 By the way, any movie news? I’ve got my fingers crossed! Thanks for the stories, Jennifer!

    • Thank you for getting a copy, Emily. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

      Aurelia’s eyes are dark blue.

The African girl’s name is Mereyet.

And yes, I would love to come out to Southern California! All I need is an invite from someone willing to host me.

No movie news yet. Soon, I hope!

  21. Oh my gosh. Ok so I pre-ordered this got it before the release day idk how I’m currently reading it and IM LOVIN IT!!!! I didn’t check your blog for a bit because I got sucked into Nic’s world! Haha, im gonna go back and read it BYE! 😀

  22. I have completed Mark of the Thief!

Now I am enduring one heck of a book hangover, and am awaiting the release of book 2. *sigh*

    • Thank you very much! I think you’re going to love book 2 even more – it’s just epic!

      • YAY!!! 😀

  23. I have just got done reading it. And I LOVE it soon much I love the twist at the end about general Raldulf (sorry Don’t know if I spelled his name right)

    • Thank you, Aliyah! Just wait until book 2 once Nic is forced to live in his home – lots of tension there.

  24. I love this book so much!! Couldn’t put it down after I started reading it ! Mythical books are like the only ones that interest me and considering in in 5th grade that’s pretty good I’m just sad that it ended so quickly after I started reading!

    • That’s pretty amazing, actually. You must be pretty crazy smart, Aliyah!

  25. Keep on writing for me and I’ll keep reading lol

  26. This book was so good! Please Please continue this series. Because in all honesty this book was the best book I have read in a long time. Thank so much. And please ASAP make a sequel. 🙂

    • That’s awesome, Christian – you totally made my morning with this comment! I am in edits for book 2 right now and outlining book 3. They’re gonna be epic!

  27. Hi Jennifer,, do you have any movie news?

  28. I love this book! I recommend it to everyone I see! Two questions though. When will book 2 be released and how old is Nic? I’ve been wondering about that for a while. Amazing book!!!

    • Book 2 will probably be another year (well, 11 1/2 months) until it’s released. I’m in edits for it right now. And Nic is 14 years old. Thanks for reading, Sophie – I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

  29. hey there! Just wanted to comment how great your books are! They cheer me up….. Well, reading I. General cheers me up, but your books are something special. I loved the false prince and the trilogy and I’m so excited about the possible movie. I was flabbergasted when I read that they might be making a movie…. And I’ve kinda stalked your blog ever since for any upcoming news.

    • Thanks, Génesis – I’m glad they put a smile on your face! Please do continue stalking. I hope I’ll have news soon!

  30. Hey!My name is Kyky, and I’m kinda new to to the books of Jennifer A. Nielson and I just finished the Ascendance Trilogy and oh my, GOSH I LOVED THEM!! The plot twists in them killed me inside!;) It’s the best book series I’ve ever read! I love the adventure, the plot twists, and the love between Imogen and Jaron. IT IS SO AWESOME! I think they should be turned into movies. I’d so see those. Well thank you for taking the time to read this and God bless.

  31. How many copies of Mark of the Thief have you sold? And how many copies of the other books have you sold? It would be cool to know how many books of yours are out there. And are the books in any other language than English?

    • Well, believe it or not, I never really know. I get royalty statements twice a year telling me how many were sold in that six-month period, but I’d have an easier time deciphering Chinese. If my editor is happy, then I’m happy. You can read about foreign editions for the Ascendance Trilogy here: I haven’t updated the page for Mark of the Thief yet.

  32. Mrs Nielsen –
My sister’s copy of Mark of the Thief arrived yesterday from the King’s English Bookshop autographed. She was so utterly thrilled. She let me read it after she was done.
I ashamed to admit I wasn’t expecting much. When I get my hopes up too high, then when I read the book, it turns out to be the worst book ever.
You are officially my favorite author.
It was so amazing! I’m already waiting until the next book comes out.
I felt I could connect with Aurelia, and Nic seemed to be a bit like Sage – when he gets angry, especially.
If A Night Divided is so captivating, you are going to be the BEST author ever.
    – Loreley, your biggest fan in the entire universe – galaxy – everywhere.

    • Aw, thank you, Loreley. You’re awesome to say such kind things to me.

  33. Mrs. Nielsen~
I got your book at my book fair two days ago (after anxiously awaiting the arrival of your book) and finished reading it yesterday. I absolutely, most definitely love your book with all my heart. I can sheepishly admit that I kind of read it, like, two times already and can’t stop reading it. The characters are so beautifully structured and they make so much sense, I can relate so well to their feelings. I could never write something as amazing as you do. Every time I sit at the computer to write, I always get stumped. Thankfully, I have your book to help me through my writing process. I’d also like to comment on how fast you get out your books to please your readers and fans. The books come out fast but still contain the quality writing and adventure I look for when I’m searching for a book.
In the Ascendance Trilogy, I love how all the books are really good, not just the first book of the series. That’s what usually happens to all the series I read, the first book is amazing and the other ones are just space fillers. These were all linked together with this beautiful golden thread of adventure and spirit and well planned out plots.
What I’m really trying to say is that you, Mrs. Nielsen, are one of the best writers ever to walk this earth. I know that’s kind of cheesy and sort of seem just like words on a screen some silly fan wrote, but I really, truly and honestly mean it.
Thank you for sharing your writing with the world,

    • Well Samantha, if it was sort of cheesy, it did still bring a huge smile to my face this morning. Thanks for such kind words. I’m honored to have you for a reader!

  34. Absolutely fantastic book, the only negative is….. Having to wait for the next book! I havnt read a book in some years, my daughter had it at her book Fair and I just decided to get it. Wow! Love it!

  35. OMG just read this book for the second time! It was so good I just couldn’t stop reading! I loved the Ascendance Trilogy so much and when I found out you were making another Trilogy I couldn’t wait to read it! You are truly one of my favorite authors! Can not wait for A Night Divided to come out! Yay so excited!!!

    • Thanks very much, Lindsay! I’m glad these books have gotten so much love from you!

  36. The False Prince is my favourite series i have read and i think Mark of a theif tops it. will there be a movie for either of them, if there will be about when would it be in the theatres?

    • Many thanks, Kyle! I’ll know about a movie for The False Prince in August, and find out then if and when it’s coming to the theatres. There is no movie news for Mark of the Thief, though I’m very glad you enjoyed it!

  37. hey, I’m doing an essay on you and your book. all I need to know is why you wrote the book
