Until now, I had never liked Saintsβ Day. My family used to celebrate each year, of course, as part of a large banquet involving every noble in the land. After a while, I stopped participating, mostly because I received too many gifts.
On any other day, gifts wouldβve been a good thing, but not on Saintsβ Day. On that day, the person receiving the gift must be someone who did not deserve it, someone who had caused great offense to the gift-giver.
So when the gifts used to pile up in front of me, the message was clear.
βAt least you get presents,β Darius had told me once. He rarely received anything on Saintsβ Day.
Iβd rolled my eyes back at him. βI received thirty-two Books of Faith tonight. Half of them have notes inside recommending specific pages for me to study. The other half say thereβs no point in their gift, because the devils already have me.β
βIt wonβt always be that way,β Darius had said.
I hoped he was right. Because this past year, Iβd fought a war in Carthya and saved a captive kingdom abroad. Maybe for once, I had earned the right to celebrate with the Saints. Only tonightβs banquet wouldnβt be with the nobles. That was pointless since I deliberately offended them whenever possible, and didnβt want forgiveness for something that entertained me that well. Instead, I only wanted a small gathering with those I cared about most.
Across from me, Roden was dishing up fourths onto his plate. To my left, Tobias and Amarinda were staring at each other. On my right, Fink had been talking endlessly to Imogen. So far, it had been a perfect evening, though of course, the part I dreaded most was about to begin.
Finally, Fink set down his fork. βCan we start now?β
βFine,β I said, preparing myself for the usual round of gifts. βI already know that over the past year, I have offended, irritated, or caused misery to everyone here. Who wants to begin?β
A pause followed as they stared at each other, then Fink said, βActually, my gift is for Amarinda.β
Amarindaβs doubletake came almost as fast as mine. She never offended anybody, not even accidentally.
βMe?β she asked. βMay I ask why?β
βBecause you make me study every day,β Fink said, reaching for his gift. βI hate studying, but you still make me do it. But I forgive you.β
Amarinda smiled. βYou forgive me for trying to make you smarter, and a better person?β
βYes.β Fink passed her a small package, which she unwrapped, revealing a book. Then he laughed out loud. βI tricked you! Now you have to study.β
βBut I want to study,β she said. βI like learning.β
Fink instantly stopped laughing. βOh, thatβs right.β
βMy turn then,β Amarinda said.
I held out my hands, but instead, Amarinda gave her gift to Tobias. βI heard that you spoke rather sharply to Jaron on the lifeboat. You should have trusted me to be strong, rather than to be angry with him. This is my way of forgiving you.β
Tobiasβs cheeks went red. βI will never forget that again.β He opened the package to a small drawing of Amarinda, one where she looked as confident and capable as Iβd ever seen her. He could not look at this and doubt her strength.
And although I had insulted him at every good opportunity, Tobiasβs gift went to Imogen, a new pair of boots. He explained, βBack on Belland, Jaron took you with him up the trail and left me behind with Fink. Maybe at one time, he might have asked me to come, but he has begun to trust you more.β
Imogen shook her head. βHe doesnβt trust me more than you; itβs just different.β
βNo, I definitely trust her more,β I assured them with a smile.
Imogen thanked Tobias, then passed a package to Roden, which frankly, was odd since no one could possibly have caused her more grief in the past year than I had. He opened the package, finding a dagger. She said, βThis is to replace the one you used to stab Jaron in the thigh. I forgive you for that.β
βYouβre forgiving him? Shouldnβt I be the one to do that?β I glanced over at Roden. βYouβre still not forgiven, by the way.β
βNo, this forgiveness is mine.β She turned back to Roden. βDo you know how many times I had to listen to Jaron complain about that injury? Honestly, Roden, that went too far.β
βI accept your forgiveness,β Roden said.
I banged my goblet on the table, drawing everyoneβs attention my way again. βI donβt wish to argue about this, but that was his knife in my thigh. I had every right to complain.β
βYou did, which is why I didnβt need to forgive you,β Imogen said, taking my hand.
βYou couldβve forgiven me for something else then,β I said. βAll of you could have. Tobias? Youβre my Minister of Limiting Boring People to No More Than Eight Minutes! Doesnβt that offend you?β
βWhy should it?β He shrugged. βI find most of those boring people quite fascinating.β
I looked at Fink. βSurely I offended you.β
Before he could answer, Roden stood. βYou offended me plenty.β
It was about time. Yet his hands were empty. βWhereβs your gift then?β
Roden looked around and finally picked up his fork, which he walked over to me, then said, βI forgive you, Jaron.β
βThat fork is already mine. It isnβt a gift.β
He dropped the fork in front of me. βI didnβt get you a gift, all right? Only forgiveness.β
βFor?β
βFor being a good king.β
I tilted my head. βAnd how exactly does that offend you?β
βBecause for a brief moment, I was going to be the King of Carthya, or so I thought. Conner chose me, which meant I had outsmarted you. I had won. Then you tricked me, and I was angryββ
βYou tried to assassinate me.β
βAll right, I was very angry.β He shrugged. βMaybe I never quite got over it. Until tonight.β
By now, my smile had faded. βYouβre forgiving me for tricking you?β
βNo.β He stared back at me. βIβm forgiving you for being you. I wanted to be king, and maybe Iβd have been a good one. But you have proven yourself a great king. And I forgive you for it.β
I wasnβt sure how to answer that, except to raise my goblet to him, which he returned with a sincere nod of respect.
βNothing for me then,β Fink said, though I couldnβt tell if he was relieved or disappointed. βHavenβt I offended anyone this year?β
βYou have offended me,β Imogen said.
βAnd both me and Tobias,β Amarinda added.
βI mostly just try to ignore you,β Roden said.
Fink turned to me, and I nodded, quickly adding, βActually, you never offended me, but your rat did. I really hated your rat.β
Fink shrugged. βYou didnβt even notice when he died.β
βI was fighting a war at the time.β
βSure, but you couldβve said something.β
I groaned. βI wouldnβt have had anything nice to say about your rat. But itβs time I forgive it forβ¦being a rat. And forgive you for having it.β
Errol had been at the door and now I motioned for him to come forward with both hands behind his back. When he reached Fink, he brought one hand out, revealing a small cage with a new rat inside it. Finkβs eyes lit up. βJaron, really?β
βIf I see this thing loose in the castle, I wonβt know itβs your pet and Iβll kill it.β
βIβll put a ribbon around its neck.β
βIβll remove the ribbon, then tell you I didnβt know it was your pet before I killed it. I mean it, Fink. You keep that thing in its cage, in your room, where I canβt hear it or see it or smell it.β
βIβm going to name him Runaway.β
βThatβs a terrible name. It implies that it will escape its cage.β
Fink smiled. βToo late. I already named it.β
βFine.β With that finished, I reached for Imogenβs hand, who took Finkβs, and so went our hands around the table.
Imogen said, βThis was a difficult year. May the coming year bring us only peace and happiness.β
The others agreed, but for my part, I couldnβt imagine a happier, more peaceful moment than this one. That is, until halfway through dessert when Fink said, βUh, Jaron, Iβm going to need another gift of forgiveness from you.β
My eyes narrowed. βWhy?β
βMy rat is gone.β
I took a deep breath, reminding myself that I wasnβt going to curse as much around Fink. After taking my first bite of dessert, I calmly said, βFind that rat, or I guarantee in one minute, Iβll be the one needing your forgiveness.β
Fink stared at me, wondering if I was serious.
βFifty-nine, fifty-eight, fifty-sevenβ¦β
Thatβs about the time when something ran over my foot.
But today was Saintsβ Day. So Iβd let this one go.
Only this once.

This is awesome! I really like Jaron’s personality. I am a huge fan. I started reading the false prince in April this year and I just finished reading the Captive Kingdom. I want to know when the fifth book will come out.
Hi,
I know you were probably talking to Jennifer Nielsen and not me but the fifth book should come out in fall 2021, probably October.
Runaway. Best name ever. Fink is a genius. Also that rat broke a world record, it ran away in less than a minute.
OH MY GAWD…couldn’t have said what was on my mind any better than that, Neda!
Oh, wow. I really liked the story!! Jaron hasn’t changed one bit! π I can’t wait for more short stories from The Ascendance Series!
Oh I missed seeing Fink’s rat in the series! He escaped so fast though, will he get a new one?! He should, and it should be part of book 5!! (Or book 6, didn’t you already finish writing book 5…?)
Also this is the funniest blog post so far!! I read it twice in a row and it’s hilarious!!
Your books are awesome, my friend and I are so excited about Rescue coming out!! It sounds awesome from what I’ve heard of it!!
Awww. So cute! Love love love! The beginning was so true. I can imagine how many gifts Jaron probably got:) Its so nice that Roden forgave Jaron. I loved the whole idea how everyone forgave each other and everything. I loved that Fink as a big part of it, mainly because he’s my favorite character. Although in the Runaway King, Jaron tells Fink that he can’t bring his rat to the castle. So maybe he got a new one?
Anyway, thanks for these little stories. Please make more! Thanks in advance!
ERROL!!! AND A RODEN FORGIVING JARON PIECE? THIS IS…… AMAZING TO SAY THE LEAST. THANK YOU!
I love ascendants books so keep it up itβs awesome
Thank you for this perfect gift! It is delightful and you are very kind to give me more Jaron for Christmas!
I love how you said, more jaron. like, i want jaron. he is the best!!!!!
Hi, I am a gigantic fan of your Ascendance Trilogy and I loved this story! When I had finished reading The Captive Kingdom, I wanted to know more about the fifth book. It was then that I discover your blog, and the horrifying news that I had to wait about a year to read more about Jaron. Today I saw that you posted a short story and was overwhelmed with joy. This is an amazing story and I canβt wait for the fifth book! Have a good year!
Ninette has a new friend!
Runaway is Ninetteβs son!!!
do they still have the mistletoe tradition or something like it?
FLORALFROGS?!??
#ninettelives
oop you caught me ::
AND YES NINETTELIVES
Rest In Peace Rat, we honor your passing through Ninette and Runaway <3
Donβt worry Ascendance Clubhouse pals, weβre on the case. We suspect Rat was murdered, but donβt be too afraid, he was protecting Ninette. #Ninettelives
This was the best Christmas present!
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
(I got a signed copy of The False Prince for Christmas and I am so happy)

This was great haha! I’m glad there was some resolve between Jaron and everyone else but my favourite part was the whole rat digression, that was literary gold. Thanks! And Merry Christmas to you to!
I LOVED THIS! Thank you!
YAAAAY. I enjoyed reading this and participating in your 12 days of christmas.
This was an absolutely amazing Christmas gift, Jennifer! I loved the story, and I ca totally relate to Jaron, I HATE rats. Though I do lie guinea pigs (we have two adorable ones!).
My brother really liked Fink’s rat and was said when she (it was a she, right? I can’t remember…), so I’ll definitely show him this!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Aw, I can’t believe his rat died! Luckily we still have Ninette. I heard the rat was murdered too, trying to protect her π Now Ninette has to protect little Runaway. She’ll do amazing.
Thank you so much, it gave me a good laugh!
#ninettelives
Okay, I’m confused. I thought Ninette was Fink’s rat. Who is this other rat?
No, Ninette is just somebody who posted comments on this blog with the name “The Rat Is Ninette”, Fink’s rat’s name wasn’t mentioned in the Ascendance Series, and that is the rat who died. Then in this short story, Fink got a new rat, named it Runaway, then that rat escaped.
I love that Fink has a new rat! Love this story!
yes the story was good, but the only thing I can think about now is: FINK GOT A NEW RAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! ππππππππππππππππ his Christmas wish came true!! I am sooooooooooo happy right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (May his old rat, rat(that was her name right?) rest in piece) LONG LIVE RUNAWAY. But I swear, if jaron kills it………………
WOW WOW WOW WOW fink got a new rat!!!!!!!!!!! I love it!!! Oh my god Iβve been waiting for this to happen THANK YOU JENNIFER NIELSEN!!!!!!!!!
Loved the story. Thank you so much for another present. You have definitely made my holiday more special.
Yay! We have Fink’s rat, Errol, and the whole crew! This was so funny! I loved the interactions we got between everybody. Thank you so much!!!
Jennifer A. Nielsen has done it again! We love you so much, Jennifer! Infinite thanks for this way-too-generous Christmas present.
Fink and Jaron truly make the funniest, sweetest, greatest pair of brothers, but Jaron had better not kill that rat . . .
Praying for a fellow author,
~ Laura K. Abeid
AAHHH, THIS WAS SOOO AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!! Jaron is a legend!!!!!!!!
Aw Roden’s gift gave such perfect resolve, especially after everything he and Jaron went though on their recent adventure <3
These Ascendance short stories always make my day :))
I’m just going to quietly slip in an Ascendance short story request π€ but I would love to see the missing scene with Roden and Harlow mentioned in the epilogue of The Shadow Throne… would love to see how it all unraveled <3
Thank you again for everything you do Mrs. Jen!
Got it!
Hi Mrs. Nielson. I also have a request. I hoping for a short story about what happens to Belland when Darius becomes King of Belland. (Unless this is something that happens in the 5th book, of course)
-^-
Great suggestion = thank you!
I have a few quick questions. When you answered the question “How much older or younger is Imogen to Jaron,” you mentioned the characters’ birth date and the year of King Eckbert’s reign.
How old was King Eckbert when he was crowned? (then I can deduce how old the characters are) And how old was we when he died?
Thank you so much, Mrs. Nielsen!
~ Laura K. Abeid
Eckbert was crowned at age 15 and died at age 49. For most of his early life, a Steward ruled until he was ready to take the throne.
Thank you, Mrs. Nielsen! This was very helpful

I laughed the whole way through! I love these books so much! They are the best books I have ever read! I love this short story! I cannot wait for the 5th book! Thank you!
They are the best books I’ve ever read too! your my favourite author Mrs. Nielsen!
I LOVE RUNAWAY πππ
I HATE RUNAWAY
I don’t like to runaway
I think that we, the crazy ascendance series fans, need a symbolic # to use when on this website.
I vote #runawayrules
It will appear at the end of any of my comments wether they are rat related or not.
Who wants to join me and give runaway all the support a growing rat needs?
#runawayrules
no one
That just rude
#runawayrules
NO ONE RUNAWAY SUCKS
He can never replace Ninette but
#runawayrules
Thank you!!
#runawayrules
Luj, please keep in mind that everyone here is trying to have a good time, and remember this quote:
“If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”
Thank you π
~ Laura K. Abeid
i hate it when people say that. people can say what they want—-like , so what if someone thinks runaway sucks!!!
I’m not a hashtagger, but since Luj insisted . . .
#runawayrules π
hiiii itβs me #runawayrules again, Iβm just rereading the story (again!) and OH MY GOD itβs amazing, I can really imagine jaron getting all those presents, itβs so funny I just couldnβt stop laughing π
But really, all I can think about is RUNAWAYRUNAWAYRUNAWAY Iβm soooo happy fink got a new rat, I really hope he appears in one of the books, maybe the shattered castle or maybe if thereβs going to be a sixth one (π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€π€)
Iβd β€οΈ To think that you put the rat in for all us fink+rat fans, I canβt believe ninette found such a cool successor. Why am I so exited about a rat??????
#runawayrules
What a funny side story Ms. Jen hahaha… Tobias and Amarinda for the win π Forgot to greet you happy holidays Ms.Jen.. Hoping next year will be better. God bless you π
*squeals* Another Ascendence short story?? Don’t mind if I do!
Thank you for writing these up for us, Mrs. Nielsen; it’s such a treat reading about our favourite characters and catching up on the daily shenanigans! I was hooked at the third sentence for this one, and the rest was perfectly light-hearted and full of the beauty that is finally Jaron’s family. Teaches us all to be thankful and hopeful, even if we’ve got ourselves a Fink in the family. π
Thanks for all the fun these past few days and I hope you enjoy the rest of the holidays, everyone! π
yesss errol is back!!!! lol
This was so funny to read! Thank you for writing this π
Oh my goodness!! I absolutely love it! You are such an amazing author Jennifer, thank you so much for the wonderful reads. I have to say, Jaron is my absolute favorite character because he is unique and I have always admired his character. Thanks for revealing his personality so well. π
Jaron is my favorite character too!
i know i love him
I needed this soo much. I loved the short story. Jaron is my favourite character, he is always getting into trouble and, I love how he always has something to say. Also the fact that Jaron got Fink a rat was awesome because he hates the things, and Fink named it Runaway then it immediately ran away… But if im being honest the Countdown at the end was AMAZING π
I loved the story sooo much and I love how Jaron got Fink a new rat and it immediately escaped
lol! this was hilarious. I forgot fink even had a rat.
Lol! this was hilarious! i forgot fink even had a rat!
I loved this! it was hilarious. I forgot Fink even had a rat.
sorry didn’t mean to put that in twice
I really hated how Jaron just assumed he would get everything, which made me flinch, but it was really good in the end!
I think Jaron assumes he’s going to get everything because he knows that he’s caused a lot of pain. But you’re right in that he shouldn’t assume he should get everything.
It’s complicated ethics, I guess Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
~ Laura K. Abeid
yeah jaron acts kind of spoiled sometimes……
Oh my goodness! I absolutely love it. It is so cool to see Jaron and Fink’s troubles on a holiday! Even if I am just now posting this. Thank you for being such an inspiration Mrs. Neilson!
Kinda random but I’d really like to know what Fink’s rat was named in the second book please.
Just read all your short stories and I totally love them! I read in a comment earlier about a short story you wrote called Storm about Jaron’s daughter. I was wondering where you an read this?
Thank you!
It’s on the audio book for Shattered Castle.
can*
I love how protective Imogen is over Jaron like she’s his babysitter or something. I LOVE ASCENDANCE!!!!!!!! and though i wished there was a story about jaron and imogen’s kids. Jen Niesen should definantly write another short story and it would be during the shattered casle but from imogen’s point of view. i have always wondered what was going through her mind in that book.i was SO mad at jaron and how stupid he was and didnt tell imogen about the scope, and ruined their relationship. but i hated batilda even more (batilda is a karen!!!!) LOL now batilda is like my favorite character.
my favorite characters:
#1 Imogen (obviously!!!)
#2 captain Strick (pirate lady!!!)
#3 Batilda (idk i love her)
#4 Jaron (he’s just so Jaron)
#5 Fink (i love his rat)
