Before that, on tomorrowโ€™s blog Iโ€™m answering questions. Things you would ask if we were hanging out. Iโ€™ll choose eleven questions to answer, so put `em in the comments!

Now, in no particular order:

10.  From THE SCOURGE

โ€œWhereโ€™s your friend?โ€ Brogg asked. โ€œThe boy who was with you?โ€

I kept my eyes straight forward, refusing to look either up or down the river. Weevil would be somewhere nearbyโ€”I knew it. But the last time he revealed himself, he ended up with a bump on his head and a long ride in an isolation wagon.

โ€œWeโ€™ll find him,โ€ Brogg said. โ€œWe always find the escapees.โ€

โ€œSo a lot of people escape that cell?โ€ I asked. โ€œDoes the governor know how bad you are at your job?โ€

9.  From THE TRAITORโ€™S GAME

Simon continued searching, next with my hair, possibly checking for hidden pins that might be sharpened to a fine point. I had none, but once this was over I planned to have some made.

โ€œEnjoying this?โ€ My tone was as bitter as I felt.

โ€œIโ€™d rather search a bear.โ€

โ€œI wish you would. If Iโ€™d known this was coming, Iโ€™d have brought one along.โ€

โ€œBut you didnโ€™t know, because we outsmarted you.โ€ For the first time, he looked directly at me. His smile was triumphant. Arrogant. It wouldnโ€™t look that way during his execution. He pointed to my boots. โ€œRemove them.โ€

โ€œYou do it.โ€ All the easier to kick him if he got into the right position.

8.  From THE WARRIORโ€™S CURSE (TRAITORโ€™S GAME BOOK 3)

Unnerved, I yanked my hand free and he immediately backed away, eyes wide with alarm. โ€œYou considered killing me just now?โ€

Killing him? No, of course not! Yes, maybe Iโ€™d considered draining his strength, incapacitating him for days, but I wouldnโ€™t kill him. How would he have known that anyway?

7. MARK OF THE THIEF

โ€œYou will do as I say, Nic!โ€ Salโ€™s anger echoed inside this small underground chamber. โ€œIโ€™ve tolerated your disobedience far too long.โ€

โ€œTolerated?โ€ I snorted. If near starvation, beatings, and dangerous assignments were tolerance, then yes, Sal had been excessively generous to me.

As part of the grand joke that had become my life, the Gods had given me a master with the wit of a withered carrot and compassion of a wasp. He also smelled like toe fungus, though thatโ€™s less relevant. More significant is that of the hundreds of slaves who worked in the mines, Sal hated me the most. This was no great surprise, since Sal had always stood out to me as someone well worth hating back.

6. RESISTANCE

They were headed for death camps, designed to kill hundreds or even thousands of people a day. Iโ€™d seen them. Been sickened by them. Had my heart shattered by them.

The Nazis called these camps their solution to the so-called โ€œJewish Problem.โ€

Yes, I very much intended to be their problem.

5. RESCUE

Maybe he was a German spy, one whoโ€™d practiced the British language and accent. If he was, better that I find out now.

โ€œIf youโ€™re from England, you must know the best place in London to buy bread pudding.โ€ I began stepping around the barn toward the sound of his voice, keeping my shovel ready.

โ€œThatโ€™s a matter of opinion,โ€ he replied. โ€œI prefer the puddings of Birmingham to any of those in London.โ€

I rolled my eyes, irritated with myself. Anyone could have answered that question. Taking a few more steps, I asked, โ€œAnd how close is Birmingham to Scratchy Bottom?โ€

Silence. Then, โ€œAre you sure thatโ€™s the name of a place? Or did you only hear it in the schoolyard?โ€

I hesitated. โ€œI think itโ€™s a real place.”

4.  BLACK INK (unedited)

Before she rounded the last corner to exit Shady Isles, Brick grabbed her pack and gave it a hard yank, stopping her in her tracks. She turned, raising a fist as if ready to fight. He dodged that, then whispered, โ€œWhatever youโ€™re hiding, theyโ€™re going to find it.โ€

Her eyes darted. โ€œMy mom would kill me if she knew what Iโ€™m doing.โ€

โ€œYeah, but I bet the people here would kill you faster.โ€ Brick pulled the backpack off her shoulder and swung it onto his. โ€œRule number one of shoplifting is not to look like youโ€™re shoplifting.โ€ He forced a grin, and even elbowed her side to loosen her up. โ€œThought you were a smart girl, Venice.โ€

3.  THE SHATTERED CASTLE (Ascendance Book 5)

I had already slid the pin out of my belt, but there was no way to hide what I was doing from the vigils, so I simply exchanged glares with them as I worked.

โ€œStop that!โ€ Weakling said.

I only grinned back at him. โ€œIf I stop now, how will I get free of these chains?โ€

The mean-looking one reached for the keys. โ€œWe told you to stop!โ€

โ€œYes, I know. I heard you before.โ€

2.  A NIGHT DIVIDED (Alternate Opening, Deleted Scene)

I had a plan. If they tried to arrest me, I would explain that it was my birthday, which was true. If that didnโ€™t work, I would claim that all Iโ€™d wanted for a gift was a banana. Surely that couldnโ€™t be such a bad crime, a single banana.

But maybe it was. Buying anything off the black market was illegal. Everyone knew that.

Thus my plan: Donโ€™t get caught.

It wasnโ€™t the greatest plan ever, but hopefully it wasnโ€™t the worst either.

My best friend, Anna, was at the corner keeping watch for any police in the area while I made the deal with a black marketer in the narrow alleyway. She was fidgeting so nervously I wondered if she might do me more harm than good. But I understood her worries. Even if we didnโ€™t see any uniformed officers, we were hardly safe. As usual, any number of informants would be out this morning, prowling for gossip they could exchange for special favors. And worse still were the secret police. For all I knew, this black marketer was a Stasi official in disguise, trying to trap people just like me.

A banana smuggler. Over the last four years since the rise of the Berlin Wall, apparently thatโ€™s what Iโ€™d become.

1.  SPACE WOOGLE (A younger, sort-of work in progress about an alien scout searching for a good planet for invasion)

Log No. 000000000000000000000000001

The Invasion of Earth Beginsโ€ฆAfter Lunch

Everyone knows that intergalactic invasions go better on a full stomach. And thatโ€™s not just an old glubsuckerโ€™s tale; itโ€™s good strategy. Because seriously, how can anyone focus on conquering a planet when the guy next in line for total submission is only halfway through his bag of cheddar and bacon potato chips? If your instincts are to obliterate the guy, then first ask yourself this, If I vaporize him, then WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CHIPS?!?

The invasion is still happening. Oh, itโ€™s definitely happening.

But firstโ€ฆlunch.

AHHHH TEASING US WITH A FEW LINES FROM BOOK 5!! I am dying to know what got him captured, I mean I have a few guesses, but I won’t know until it’s out! I also love how he just comes up with nicknames for everyone and just goes with it, not bothering to call them by their real names even after he learns them (Lump was HILARIOUS), and I love the new one from these lines of Weakling lol! Enjoy the holidays ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved all of these! And my question:

What is the biggest challenge youโ€™ve faced in writing and how did you overcome it?

Haha! I LOVE those! “What happens to the chips?!” Hilarious!
A question I’ve really wanted to ask:
Do you have any tips for beginnings and endings?
More specifically, I notice you put your catalyst/inciting incident in the very first chapter, even before the setup. It makes for a very attention-grabbing start. Do you have any tips on how to do that while still making the reader care about the new character?
And for endings, I love how satisfying they are, even in trilogies. Do you have any tips on finding the balance between answering enough questions for the ending to be satisfying while leaving enough unanswered to get readers to read the next book? Thank you so much!

Oh, these were so funny. I laughed so hard.

My question would probably have to be. . . How did you go about publishing your first book?

    Thanks

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aaahhh, SAGE IS A GENIUS!!!!! (Of course, that was my FAVORITE one…well, more tied to the last one, that was HILARIOUS!!!!! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ) But I LOVED THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s my question (though, I kind of doubt it’ll be one of the answered ones. That’s okay, though.): What’s your favorite color? (I know this might be a strange question to ask, but I have a perfectly almost-logical explanation for it. It’s a question that’s always having to be asked on my blog. It’s almost tradition now. XD)

These completely made my day! The opening couple of pages to Mark of the Thief have to be one of my favorite beginnings to a book! When you discussed Black Ink at the Launch Party, I was very intrigued, and now even more so. Lump, Mercy, Weakling….Jaron is on a roll. And Space Woogle sounds unbelievably hilarious.
As for the question, I am about to begin the process of writing my second draft, and I am planning to change a whole lot of things, from little details to entire plot points. In the reprint of the Shadow Throne, you mentioned in the authorโ€™s note that you intended the scene with the rock to go very differently. This made me wonder: what were some of the biggest changes from your first drafts to the published editions? Which of your manuscripts changed the most? And how and why did you go about making those changes?
Thank you so much for these daily delights, and Happy Holidays!

These are awesome! and I see some new stories too!!! I love how all your characters are strong and brave and never give up.

    Some questions I had were,

****PLEASE DON”T READ IF YOU HAVEN”T READ THE SCOURGE OR THE FALSE PRINCE SERIES****

    – How much older or younger is Imogen to Jaron? or Amarinda to Jaron?

    – In The Runaway King, how does Roden figure out Sage was the real Jaron? and why does he let sage win so easily when they fought after sage comes to the feast with a broken leg? was it because he admired his determination or because he could not hurt him further after he found out he was the real deal?

    – In The Scourge did the Wardens wear masks? Didn’t colonists wonder why they ate from scourge contaminated food?

    – In The Scourge if Weevils, father was taken a year ago, why did Governor Felling wait a year to punish him for his uprising by bringing Ani and Weevil? Did she send others like Ani before? If so, why would Ani be known as the girl who brought the plague to the river country?

    Thanks!

Also in addition to my questions,
      – where do you find a publisher or how do you start writing?

      – In The False Prince, does Sage actually mean all those things he says about Carthya and becoming prince? “like I hope Avenia destroys Carthya” and did he do the coin roll on his fingers when Conner chose Roden on purpose?

      – Lastly, Although Jaron is a main character, he still hides several plot twists from us readers which to me is very amazing. How do you manage to do it?

Sorry for the many questions! I am full of them ๐Ÿ™‚

    These are funny!

I’m surprised you could pick only one snarky comment from Jaron, every other thing he says is a snarky comment – which is part of what makes him so awesome!!

    Omigosh love these XD
Question: Do you ever get the urge to, and actually do *tries to think of how to put it* … “dress up and act” while writing? (Like how I have literally dressed up as a pirate, taken up a Russian accent, etc. while working on a manuscript?) If so then we need details lol.
