A title for book five series…
Today, I am giving away three Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) of my next historical novel, RESCUE.
Here is the Goodreads summary:
Six hundred and fifty-seven days ago, Meg Kenyon’s father left their home in France to fight for the Allies in World War II, and that was the last time Meg saw him. Recently, she heard he was being held prisoner by the Nazis, a terrible sentence from which Meg fears he’ll never return. All she has left of him are the codes he placed in a jar for her to decipher, an affectionate game the two of them shared. But the codes are running low, and soon there’ll be nothing left of Papa for Meg to hold on to at all.
Suddenly, an impossible chance to save her father falls into Meg’s lap. After following a trail of blood in the snow, Meggie finds an injured British spy hiding in her grandmother’s barn. Captain Stewart tells her that a family of German refugees must be guided across Nazi-occupied France to neutral Spain, whereupon one of them has promised to free Meg’s father. Captain Stewart was meant to take that family on their journey, but too injured to complete the task himself, he offers it to Meg, along with a final code from Papa to help complete the mission — perhaps the most important, and most difficult, riddle she’s received yet.
As the Nazis flood Meg’s village in fierce pursuit, she accepts the duty and begins the trek across France. Leading strangers through treacherous territory, Meg faces danger and uncertainty at every turn, all the while struggling to crack her father’s code. The message, as she unravels it, reveals secrets costly enough to risk the mission and even her own life. Can Meg solve the puzzle, rescue the family, and save her father?

“You were born for books, Audra. To read them, to create them, and to save them.”
Nielsen, Jennifer A. Words on Fire. Scholastic Press, 2019.
I love this quote because it gives me hope that I might also have a calling to write books, instead of just using some strange form of escapism.
One of my favorite quotes is from Resistance: “Tomorrow will bring a new day of freedom, then. Whatever else it brings, we will never live in a finer time.”
I jotted this one on the inside cover of my copy of Words in Fire so I could easily reference it because it’s so good: “We all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.”
Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.
Your books especially Words On Fire is what has helped my daughter believe and dream and fall deeply in love with reading.
“We all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.” That is one of my favorite quotes from words on fire. I love to read all of your historical fiction novels because they hold such a deep message.
How do you destroy a people? You take away their culture. And how is that done? You must take their language, their history, their very identity. How would you do that?” I pressed my lips together, then looked up at her. “You ban their books
Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.

“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
Ahhh! I’m really excited to read your new historical novel. One of my favorite quotes was in resistance. “We proved that there was value in faith. And that a righteous resistance was victory in itself, no matter the outcome.” This quote made me linger in the last page for quite a time as i thought how those words could defeat all dangers… again im really excited for the rescue and cant wait to read it
My favorite quote is kind of a long one. It is the last line of the Epilogue ofWords On Fire.”Well, as you all know your mother’s name, Audra, means ‘storm.’ And so she is, children. She was a storm that helped bring freedom to all of us.” That is my favorite line because it just brings the book full circle.
“We proved that there was value in faith. There was value in loyalty. And that a righteous resistance was victory in itself, no matter the outcome. We got our three lines of history.” –Resistance
This was one of the best endings to a book that I’ve read in a long time and I loved it so much. There were a lot of really good quotes, as well as similarities between different books, and I want to some day go through and write all of them down because quotes and parallels are a couple of my favorite things when it comes to reading!
Hi again! I love Resistance and A Night Divided a lot! I believe A Night Divided was the first book I read by you and it is what got me interested in all your books. I learned a lot about the Iron Curtain from A Night Divided and my teachers were impressed when I answered all the questions on the topic. I haven’t had a chance to read Words on Fire but i’m sure i’ll love it because all your books are awesome!
My favorite quote from A Night Divided is definetly
“Not even the darkest part of my imagination could have prepared me for this.” – Gerta
I love this quote because it sets the stage for Gerta’s transformation from a helpless but hopeful young girl to the brave hero we all adore.
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try.” -A Night Divided
My son and I both liked this quote from A Night Divided by Franz Kafka, “Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable.” My 12 year old is reading it for school this month to go along with our unit on Europe and he’s really enjoying the book!
NOOOOOO I’m so sad! I live in Canada!!!! I wish I could enter.
Do you know anyone in the US that I could send the book to, and then you arrange with them to get the book?
I live in Canada too, but as I lived in the Utah (USA) before, I know people there that could help me. I’m so happy I could still enter. Hopefully Sophie can find a way to enjoy this 12 days of Christmas thing too!
I can’t decide which of your historical fictions are my favorite but I really love the two quotes from Resistance “What good is life without faith?” And “Our decision is how we live before that day comes.”
Thank you so much for writing about these things, we desperately need more people to know what our past holds.
This line from Resistance really stuck with me: “We’ll all die one day—no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes. Our path requires courage, but so does theirs. Both paths are ways to resist.”
YES!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS QUOTE, TOO!!!! HOW did I forget it???!!!
excuse me but what chapter or page number is this from?
I love this one:
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try …”
A Night Divided ♥
This is one of my FAVOURITE quotes from resistance:
“What good is faith if you’re dead?”
“What good is life without faith?”
– résistance
It was hard to choose one of my favourite quotes out of one of the three books. I had so many favourite quotes! These books are amazing!
Crap this was not suppose to be a comment in someone else’s comment. So sorry
Is anyone else trying to sing the little part at the top to the tune of twelve days of Christmas? XD
Anyway, here’s my quote (I actually have two): “That books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.” ~Lukas from Words on Fire
“You’re a writer, Audra. You are meant to create with words, not simply absorb them.” ~ Milda from Words on Fire
Okay so first off, this is amazing! Thank you for doing so much for your fans!
Okay so here is my favorite quote from Resistance.
“We all die one day-no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes.”
Oh wait, I didn’t realize someone else had already put that one in.
I had a hard time choosing between them anyway.
“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
I don’t think I have a favorite bc there are too many good ones! But I like this one: Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream
My favorite quote — “Tomorrow will bring a new day of freedom, then. Whatever else it brings, we will never live in a finer time.”
I’ve been a huge fan of your books for years–I’ve read The False Prince series, The Mark of the Thief, The Scourge and so many of your other books multiple times. I loved A Night Divided so much I also got my sister to read it, and it’s one of her all time favorite books now! My favorite quote from A Night Divided is “Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try…” Your stories are part of what has inspired me to write my own novels, and this quote is especially dear to me because I’ve applied it to my own life. I’m only 17, but I’m currently querying literary agents. It’s scary and stressful, but despite the rejections, I’m proud of myself for being brave enough to put my own stories out there. Thank you for being an inspiration to me, and for writing this deeply meaningful quote that’s given me an extra boost.
“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
– Words on Fire
“May we never forget. May we live with honor at all times, regardless of our circumstances. And may we choose love, a weapon that will defeat hate every single time. Love is the resistance.” From Resistance
“She’s willing to give up book smuggling” from Words on Fire
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try…”
From: A Night Divided
One of my favorite quotes from The Night Divided is “If I don’t stand for freedom, then I must sit in chains.”
“Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light.” ❤
“Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light”
A Night Divided
My favorite quote is from A Night Divided. “For me, and for my family, the long, dark night was over.” I think this is such a beautiful quote, signifying in one sentence the long wait her family has had to be together and live free.
“We’ll all die one day–no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes.” -Resistance
I really loved this book. And this was a great quote to show what is at the heart of it – the small decisions that show what we’re made of and willing to resist for.
I think one of my favorite quotes from Words on Fire is “Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
As a writer, I think this is a very important idea because for a lot of people, writing is their voice. And if it were to be taken away, then it would be taking away our freedom to speak, dream, and think freely, as this quote states.
My favorite quote is from Resistance:
“In the knowing, there was peace.”
So many favorite moments! One of my favorite quotes from Resistance:
“The Nazis murder us many times over. They take our ability to worship properly–a spiritual death. They separate our families–another death there. They kill our dignity, our will to live, and finally they take our lives. The question isn’t whether my family is gone. It’s only a matter of how many deaths they’ve suffered so far.”
It’s a really sad quote… but I think it really beautifully illustrates the horrors that were done to the Jewish people during WWII.
“Berlin was a symphony of whispers.” -A Night Divided
Comment “Someone thought the idea and put it into words on paper. That became a seed, and every time someone reads those words, the seed is planted in their mind, too, and it grows and spreads and soon that tiny seed of an idea becomes belief, and belief becomes a plan, and those plans begin to change the world. Control the books and you will control the people.” Words on Fire
Comment “The sun never rises in the west, but that day it did. For me, and for my family, the long, dark night was over.”
I love that quotation. It is so beautiful and perfectly sums up the story in such an amazing way.
Are we allowed to enter more than once?
Sorry, just once.
“It’s no crime to think, or to speak, or to be me.”
-A Night Divided
My favorite quote is “If I don’t stand for freedom, then I must sit in chains” from A Night Divided, because it’s so true that we cannot have freedom if we don’t fight for it, if we don’t work for it ourselves. A life without freedom isn’t much of a life at all, so it’s worth sacrificing for.
“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.” Words on Fire
I’m not going to enter because I just read and e-ARC of this and loved it! It’s such a gripping, fast-paced story filled with danger.
From A Night Divided: “Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try.”
I have this quote up in my room for my students to look at.
“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
This is from Words on Fire
From Words on Fire –
“‘How do you destroy a people? You take away their culture. And how is that done? You must take their language, their history, their very identity. How would you do that?’ I pressed my lips together, then looked up at her. “You ban their books.'”
“If I don’t stand for freedom, then I must sit in chains.” ~A Night Divided
I thought it was so awesome to see this book added to a Sonlight homeschool core, because that’s what our family uses and I already loved the book!
It’s not often I read a story book with a highlighter in hand….until I started ready your historical fiction books. I’m not sure if I can choose a favorite but this one has stuck with me for a good long while: “We are all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.”
I know this one has already been used, but it just speaks such large volumes to me…
“ Tomorrow will bring a new day of freedom, then. Whatever else it brings, we will never live in a finer time.”
This is awesome! My favorite quote is a quote from Resistance.
“This was always my mission. I always knew if it came to this moment, what I’d have to do.”
-Esther
I love all your books, but my favorite quotes from resistance are,
“We’ll all die one day—no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes.” and “May we never forget. May we live with honor at all times, regardless of our circumstances. And may we choose love, a weapon that will defeat hate every single time. Love is the resistance.” and “hatred runs deeper and wider than a single race or nationality, and if love was not stronger, hatred would run through the generations. I intended to be stronger.”
“We’ll all die one day–no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes.” I love this quote because it shows us all that we have choices on how we chose to live.
I love all your books, but my favorite quotes from resistance are,
“May we never forget. May we live with honor at all times, regardless of our circumstances. And may we choose love, a weapon that will defeat hate every single time. Love is the resistance.” and “hatred runs deeper and wider than a single race or nationality, and if love was not stronger, hatred would run through the generations. I intended to be stronger.”
There are too many quotes to pick from!
I do really like, “The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become like the snake.”
Thank you for inspiring my students to read more and more.
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try”.
I love A Night Divided so much! It has such a special place in my heart!
I love your books so much! I have been counting down the months until rescued comes out! I am so excited! My favorite quote from words on fire is…
“The we’ll say it,” a woman’s voice said. More than ten years later,
I knew that voice. I’d heard it every night in my dreams. “My little rue, you brought us home. “How we’ve missed you.” I knew that voice as well. It had been imprinted into my heart.
Thanks for the great giveaway, Jennifer! My favorite quote of yours is from Words on Fire. It’s this one: “We all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.” I’ve said this before; this book changed my life, it’s an amazing story, and everyone needs to read it. 🙂
*we all are at
“Love is the resistance.”
-Resistance by Jennifer Nielsen
I love your books so much, especially your historical fiction! Thank you for everything, keep writing 🙂
“We’ll all die one day-no one escapes that fate. Our only decision is how we live before that day comes.”
-Resistance by Jennifer Nielsen
I love your writing so much and can’t wait for the new books! Thank you for all your books and everything you’ve been doing for your fans during these hard times!
My favorite qoute from Resistance is: “One day, I’ll become your equal, Chaya, not your burden.”
Oh No! I have to choose one quote? Only one? Ok probably “Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light” from A Night Divided because that’s my phone’s lock screen picture…
Wow Rescue sounds awesome! Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy as soon as I can! Here’s one of my favorite quotes from A Night Divided:
“Just as my father had infected me, I could now infect others. But with what? Courage to speak out? To act? To think and question and believe what I wanted to believe? Somehow I lived in a world where these were bad things.”
All such good books, Jennifer! From “A Night Divided” is this beautiful line: “‘This is God’s hand at work, heling us,’ Mama said, clutching my hand to leave. ‘Say a prayer of thanks as we walk.'” So many reasons I love that line and especially this chapter of the book. Strong girl, stronger mama. Good writing!!!
I like this quote from A Night Divided. It’s a reminder that courage isn’t always about ability, it’s about heart and determination.
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try . . .”
-Jennifer Nielsen, A Night Divided
I know thus one has been shared a couple times before, but its my absolute favorite!
“Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try . . .” – A Night Divided
I am super excited for rescued! Here is my quote from A Night Divided…
“Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light”
I couldn’t find the one I wanted, but this one’s also great.
“We all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.”- Words on Fire
This one really stands out to me: “How do you destroy a people? You take away their culture. And how is that done? You must take their language, their history, their very identity. How would you do that?” I pressed my lips together, then looked up at her. “You ban their books
“By the time we formally received our independence, Lithuania had long considered itself free.” -Words on Fire
My favorite quote from one of your historical fictions (Resistance) has to be “hatred runs deeper and wider than a single race or nationality, and if love was not stronger, hatred would run through the generations. I intended to be stronger.” This has been my favorite book for years, I’m so glad you’re giving people this opportunity!
“We all smiled but not that much, and frowned but rarely cried. Nobody could succeed here but most people around me seemed to be okay with that. It meant they wouldn’t fail either. I didn’t want to be like them. And at the same time I was forgetting how to be different, how to be my own self. It was the feeling of being swallowed up and I hated it.” From the book A Night Divided
That quote is my favorite because it’s something I could relate too. Almost every dream I had people would shut down immediately and tell me I could never do it. I had a lot of mean teachers in school there were some good ones but they were rare to find. So many people I knew felt like failing and not succeeding with what they wanted to do because people would say hurtful words to them. There were times when I wanted to fit in because I was an outsider or an outcast in school from my likes and dislikes to my personality than others in school.
“How do you destroy a people? You take away their culture. And how is that done? You must take their language, their history, their very identity. How would you do that?” I pressed my lips together, then looked up at her. “You ban their books” From Words on Fire.
I love the quote “Tomorrow will bring a new day of freedom, then. Whatever else it brings, we will never live in a finer time.”
“If I cannot speak what I think, then it’s a crime just to be me”, A Night Divided. I like this quote because it’s right, if I can’t speak what I think or feel then I’m not really me, am I?
From “A Night Divided” I love this quote: “‘This is God’s hand at work, helping us,’ Mama said, clutching my hand to leave. ‘Say a prayer of thanks as we walk.'” Strong Gerta, stronger Mama. That whole chapter is priceless! Good writing from you, Jennifer!
Looking through the comments, I’m reminded of so many wonderful parts of all of your historical books! Being the serious book-lover that I am, this is one of my many favorites:
“That books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.” ~Lukas from Words on Fire
Hello Jennifer! (Can I call you that, or do you prefer Ms. Nielsen?)
I really loved this quote from Words On Fire: Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.
It really described what books are, and why we have them.
“Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light”
“We all at risk of becoming the snake one day. The moment we start to choose what’s easy or safe, instead of choosing what’s right, we start to become the snake.”
Your books are amazing! My daughter and I are hooked!
Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings.
“If I cannot speak what I think, then it’s a crime just to be me!” -A Night Divided
Rescue sounds sooo interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait to read it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven’t read any of your historical fiction books yet but I really want to! I do know that a couple of months back another girl I blog with put on our blog a quote from Resistance for our “Book quote of the month”. It was: “I intended . . . to remind myself that wherever there was evil, good men and women would also rise up to fight it” -Chaya Lindner (Resistance).
I thought that quote was beautiful!<3<3
Since RESISTANCE is by far my favorite historical fiction of yours, I choose a quote from there:
“No, Chaya. As much as the Nazis want to take our lives, they want to take our faith too. We fight for one, Avraham’s friends fight for the other.”
“What good is faith if you’re dead?”
“What good is life without faith?”
I think this quote is very important because people tend to lose sight of their faith when they’re put under harsh circumstances. I can’t wait for RESCUE to come out and I know I’m going to love it. Thank you for being the best author ever!
“We got our three lines of history.”
~Chaya Lindner in Resistance
Hi, I really love your books and I have for a very long time. Here is my favorite quotes. “Do you believe in magic, Roze” and “He had to fight the snake, or one day he might become the snake” -Words on fire.
Hi! Thank you SO MUCH for doing this! When I saw this I immediately did an emergency Zoom meeting with my friend to tell her about it, as we are HUGE fans of your writing!
I never really remember quotes that well from books, so when I saw I needed one, I immediately checked out the eBook version of Resistance, and I finished it in a day and a half! I had like 20 quotes that I loved, but I ended up picking three that really stood out to me:
(1) “Twelve cans of food would save no one. Worse still, I kept two cans back. Maybe it was selfish. Maybe that made me – even in some small way – like the OD who took those blankets for his family. But I still had a family too. These two cans were for them.”
I had never thought of that, never compared the two things, but it must have been so hard in ways I hadn’t even thought about.
(2) “But whatever happened, at least I could end this day knowing one life had been saved. For now, that was enough.”
And (3) “We proved that there was value in faith. There was value in loyalty. And that a righteous resistance was victory in itself, no matter the outcome. We got our three lines of history.”
I think that was the PERFECT ending for the book! It couldn’t have been any better. I love the way your books seem like they are perfect, like there is absolutely nothing I could change to make it better. Resistance is my favorite of all your historical novels, but my favorite out of all your books would definitely be The False Prince. I love all the plot twists and I have read it at least 10 times.
I don’t have a quote. I would love to win this for my daughter. She loves you and your books so much.
I have seen the magic of a nonreader who picks up one of your books, stumbles into a world of your building, and never looks back. Thank you for spreading your magic.
My favorite quote from A NIGHT DIVIDED is: “Courage isn’t knowing you can do something; it’s only being willing to try.” Such a good book!!!
Im sorry I just couldn’t choose, but I ended up with these two!
1. “The law is wrong,” I said. The words had forced themselves out, unable to be contained any longer. And once unleashed, they continued to erupt from me, angry and determined. “What you’ve done here tonight is wrong, and I will not pretend to respect it.”
2. Every book had suddenly become a life I could save, something that breathed out ideas as unique to the world as every person was unique.
Their both from Words on Fire! I found a lot of awesome quotes there! Sorry for not being able to just choose one!
My favorite quote from Words on Fire is “You’re a writer, Audra. You are meant to create with words, not simply absorb them.” This speaks to me because I can relate to it strongly. Thank you and happy holidays!
From A Night Divided, I love the quote, “If I cannot speak what I think, then it’s a crime just to be me.”
Under the current circumstances of this uniquely unusual year, I also particularly love this quote from A Night Divided, “Mama once said the most wonderful thing about being young is our ability to make things normal. That whatever life does to us, no matter how strange, it isn’t long before insanity seems ordinary, as if upside down is the way things should be.”
And I have to mention these two beautifully written quotes from A Night Divided:
“Along with most of the people in my neighborhood, I stood on the road, facing the guns that faced me.”
“Maybe she had been a prisoner here long before the fence appeared.”
A Night Divided is such a beautifully written book!
CommentI LOVE your books. I own both of these and I tell everyone I know to read them. A quote I love from Resistance is, “Our children never know how much we love them.” and Esther! “We are couriers my sweetest friend. Didn’t we always know the risks? Go now. We can still save these people.”
Thank you for your stories!
Sorry if this is a duplicate comment. I LOVE your books! I listened to A Night Divided on a road trip with my mom. I can’t wait to have my kids read them. Which is why my favorite quote from Resistance is, “Our children never know how much we love them.” I have 2 sets of twins (12 and 8). They will never know!
My favorite quote from Resistance is: “I was the one who was supposed to save her. But she was saving me instead.” I cried all the tears at the end of that book.
I can’t wait to read Rescue!
“Tomorrow will bring a new day of freedom, then. Whatever else it brings, we will never live in a finer time.”
-Chaya Linder
Thank you so much for making such an awesome book which has helped me learn so much!
