King Jaron has outwitted the Prozarians and returned to his own kingdom with one secret in his pocket that not even his friends know about. He’s hoping that secret will help him finally bring stability to Carthya.
But a surprise attack on his own land — on the castle itself — reminds Jaron that nothing is easy. The Prozarian Monarch threatens to crumble Jaron’s entire kingdom. And that’s not the only thing in danger: With old enemies and new rumors circling around him, even Jaron’s relationship with Imogen is uncertain.

The cover looks amazing, I love it! I am soooo excited for this book. I have a question that’s been bothering me for a little while. (Do not read if you haven’t finished The Shadow Throne or The Captive Kingdom)
At the end of The Shadow Throne Jaron says that as far as he knows Eric is still leading the pirates, but in the beginning of The Captive Kingdom Eric dies. Why doesn’t Jaron acknowledge that? And does he know who is leading them after Eric?
Honestly, it’s just a goof on my part. I missed that one.
Yeah, I thought that you set The Captive Kingdom 6 months back right? Because at the end of the third book, you said that Jaron and Imogen got married one year later and in the beginning of book 4, it said they still weren’t married so I was like WHAT?!

Roughly the 1400s, but I play with the actual history timeline quite a bit so it won’t match up perfectly.

Honestly, I don’t know. Reading a royalty statement to find out is roughly like reading an ancient language, so I never study it long enough to know that answer.

Yes! A movie would be awesome! I’ve also wanted to play Imogen for a really long time, and I think I look enough like her that I would be a good fit. Plus, I am a bit like her in some ways.
When you sign the books, do you just sign your name or do you write messages? I want to give this to my daughter because she’s always wanted to meet you.
I can do a signature only for those who prefer that, but most people choose to have their name, or someone else’s put in the book. If you are buying from King’s English, in the comments section, just note something like, “Please sign to…” and then the store will call me to come in and sign it.
If you already have a book you want signed, we can work out something for that too.

I’m now just remembering, in THE RUNAWAY KING, that when Jaron asked what Fink’s name was, Fink responded, “Everyone just calls me Fink.” I don’t know how he came to be an orphan, or who his family was.
Maybe–whenever you have time, or if you even want to, I mean–you could write a short story about Fink’s life before Jaron came? I would really appreciate that. 🙂

Hello! I am a new reader of the Ascendence series, but I just finished The Captive Kingdom, and I have already fallen in love with these books. I just have a couple questions about Jaron. Why is he always so secretive? In all the books, Jaron keeps some sort of secret that ends up damaging his relationships with his friends. And in The Captive Kingdom, Jaron almost loses Imogen because she thinks he doesn’t trust her with the truth. I though for sure he would give up his secretive ways and learn to trust his friends. But then in the end of The Captive Kingdom, Jaron lies about having the third lense. Why is that? Is he scared for his friends safety? His kingdoms safety?
Jaron will answer that exact question in Shattered Castle. There are reasons for it.

Hello again Mrs. Nielson! I have a few questions. You have inpsired me to write some online books! I am not publishing them. It’s kinda like ablog but with stories. So far my friends love them! Some even started writing their own books. I just don’t seem to understand why I keep gong to fast in my chapters. I just need some advice on details and slowing it down. I wrote this and my friends like it but..you see the problem right?:
My heart was pounding as I looked everywhere. Is this really happening? I thought. Am I really about to find out if my theory is true? As I started looking I heard the front door open then close.
“Honey I’m home!” my mom said. “Where are you?”
I started panicking. I will still in their room! I had to get out of here. But it was too late! My mom was already coming up the stairs! She’d see me if I ran into my room. So I ran under the bed and hid.
“Diana?” she asked as she went into my room. “Where is that girl?”.
She came out of my room and went back downstairs. She opened the door and closed it again. I guess she was looking for me in the backyard. I took the opportunity and ran from under her bed into the kitchen and into the pantry. Trying to clam myself down and act normal I drank a bottle full of water and went back into hiding in the pantry.
“DIANA!” she yelled clearly getting worried.
“Mom I’m right here!” I yelled back making myself look a little messy. “I was in the pantry looking for something to cook for dinner.” I said trying to look as innocent as possible.
“Oh honey! I got so scared! I was about to call the police!” she said as she ran to me for a hug.
“Oh sorry mom I didn’t hear you come in!” I said hugging her back. As we pulled away something caught my eye.
“Well, honey i’m going upstairs to change and shower. You can start getting dinner ready.” then she walked upstairs and disappeared around the corner. I turned my head to the place that caught my eye earlier and looked closer. I found a letter. Addressed to me! My hands shook as I opened it. When I finished reading, I realized something that I couldn’t even let myself believe.
It’s just going to fast! Please help!

This is an awesome start, Kitkat. If you need to slow down the pacing, that will happen on your rewrite as you add in some descriptions, internal thoughts, and other details. For now, just keep writing!

I just finished reading The Captive Kingdom, and I was sad because I thought that was the last book in the series, and then I saw that there was another one coming out, and really soon too! I love how you weave a story that makes me feel like I know what’s coming, but then you take the story a completely different way then I thought it was going to go and it’s so much better than where I thought it was going! You are such a good author! I want to be an author someday also, and I am currently writing a book myself. (I don’t think it’s very good, though.) Thanks, Gabi – but of course, remember that in your writing, you are on the first draft, and a first draft is never good. NEVER. So don’t give up. Just keep working toward typing “THE END,” and then rewrite and rewrite until you begin to like what’s on the page!
How old is Fink in TCK?
Hi! I have a question. Will there be any character development on Jaron’s part in this book? It seems he didnt change much character wise in the Captive Kingdom. I say this with the upmost respect!! I dont wish to offend you, but I would like to know.
Hi Ailee, the great thing with books is that we can all see them in our own unique way. I happen to think Jaron has some significant growth in his character, but that doesn’t mean you have to agree.

I don’t think I have any one favorite quote. There’s a lot that I like. One of my favorites though is from Shadow Throne, about “Nobody gives you respect in this life. You must take it, you must earn it, and then you must hold it sacred, because no matter how hard respect is to attain, it can be lost in an instant.”
I know that everything is kind of up in the air with Covid, but I was wondering if you are going to be doing an in-person release party for this book. If so, my best friend and I are going to try to take a road trip to Utah. We’re from Illinois, so we would have to make arrangements with our professors and try to find a hotel room, so that’s why I’m asking so far ahead in advance.
If you do an online release instead, we’ll definitely attend!
I will probably try to do an in-person release but I haven’t yet made any plans for it (Hmm, I suppose I should very soon). Don’t make any firm plans yet because hopefully I will also be able to go on tour and it would be entirely possible to see Chicago on the tour list.
This is amazing! Why have I only just heard of this now! My class is reading the False Prince in class, (I’ve already read it) and they are enjoying it a lot. I have two friends that have read the trilogy (cough) series, and we will totally geek out about this at school tomorrow.
P.S. I just finished the Warrior’s Curse today and I must say that it was fantastic! Do you think there will be any more in that series? The ending seemed pretty final to me.

Hi Mrs. Nielson!! I was just wondering… are there any plans for a movie?? I have a lot of favorite book series which I would LOVE to see made into movies (including The Traitor’s Game 😉), but The Ascendance Series is definitely at the top. Jaron would be so fun to see on the screen!!

I know that this is kind of random, but you have written a lot of books in a lot of different time periods, so I was wondering if you could time travel to anytime in the past, when/where would it be and why??
Hmmm, I think I’d love to see the Revolutionary War era.
That is definitely one that I would consider if I had time traveling abilities. I love learning about the Revolutionary War!!
Also, 😂, I was wondering (besides the Ascendence series), do you have any plans for more fantasies in the future?? Because I saw you are coming out with another historical fiction book -🥳🥳🥳- but I really love your medieval fantasy books.
My next series won’t be medieval fantasy – it’s not even a fantasy, but honestly, I’m not sure what genre it is. I do think you will love it though!

May I ask something (many things, I mean), mrs nielsen? this is what I’ve always been trying to imagine but got confused as I gathered information because i never learn about european medieval times.
1. We already know Imogen will be queen. In your imagination, what kind of queen will Imogen be?
2. And how will the people of Carthya accept Imogen as queen?
3. So how did the ministers respond to Jaron marrying Imogen instead of Amarinda, and Tobias marrying Amarinda instead? must have been a mess when it was announced?
4. who will walk Imogen down the aisle considering his father was already gone?
5. What is Imogen’s hobby?

Hi Erysa, Thanks for your questions. Most of your questions will be answered in the fifth book, but I can tell you that Imogen’s hobby is gardening. She loves flowers and finding ways to make them grow. I hope you will like that final book.

I just would like to say, Ms. Nielsen, thank you so much! I read Words on Fire, A Night Divided and Resistance in fourth grade. I loved them so much that I began reading the Ascendance series, the Scourge, Rescue, the Traitor’s Game and the Mark of the Thief! I now own all of these. I’m so grateful for each of these. 😁
