My 3rd favorite character is from Words on Fire. Words on Fire is my favorite book of ALL time because it shines a light on a not as well-known part of history and shows how much books can change you. So my absolute favorite character is Audra the storm.

HI! So from the ascendance trilogy my favorite characters are:
1. Sage/Jaron because i just love how he is so saracastic but also smart plus he nevers gives up
2. Imogen because its Imogen how can she not be one of your favorite characters
3. Either Fink or Mott. I couldn’t choose from either so I chose both because Fink is a literal mood and Mott is just really trustworthy and is a warrior

The ascendance trilogy
1. Sage/Jaron because I love how saracastic he is and also how he always protects his friends/family

I would say that my favorite characters are Imogen, Jaron (Obviously), and Aurelia.
Imogen is kinda like me in personality. Quiet yet blunt. However she’s actually a cinnamon roll 😊 I would like to be as brave as her.
Jaron… he’s cleverly annoying 😆 I love his sarcasm make me feel giddy all the time.
And Aurelia from Mark of The Thief series, I like strong girls as I’m not, especially since she was in ancient roman times.
So, I love the Ascendance series, so that’s where my characters are going to all come from.
First off…Kerwyn. I don’t think we appreciate the fact that this man was at the castle for all of Jaron’s craziness, and he was there when the royal family was murdered (whom were probably very good friends of his.) He keeps the kingdom together. Jaron trusts him with different secrets no one else is granted access to. That shows you what type of person he is. I just can’t help but love him.
Second, Harlowe. He’s just a good person. The world needs more people who help out those in need without judging them. The world needs more people that are accepting of people for who they are, instead of expecting them to be perfect. That’s why I love Harlowe. He’s a good man.
Lastly, Amarinda. She is is selfless. When she is told to marry Darius, she eventually accepts it, and learns to love the people so that she can be the best queen for them. Then when that doesn’t work out, she picks herself up, and continues to try and be the person the kingdom of Carthya needs, and she figures out a way to be happy about it. It can be really hard to move forward with a smile during hard times but, Amarinda does, which is pretty admirable.
Hmmm… for me, Tobias, Jaron, and Mott from Ascendance Series.

In no specific order though. They’re amazing characters with realistic flaws and fears. They make mistakes like we all do, but overcome them for the greater good. They care for other people more than they do themselves which make them a reflection of what we all should aspire to be: selfless, despite what the other (selfish and self-serving) characters in the same story try to convince them they’re not.

I just want to start off saying that every character is unique in their own ways so this was a hard question disguised as a simple question 🙂 But here probably my top three faves!

Without a doubt, Jaron is my favorite character. I’ve never met anyone like him before, and it will be difficult thing to come across his equal. He was the hook that drew me into Ascendance, and he will forever be the best part of the series.
Picking second and third favorites will be a little harder. At the moment, it’s Fink and Nila. In Fink, I see a reflection of the younger sibling that I never had – annoying at times, but full of fun, immensely loyal, and infinitely precious.
On the other hand, despite Nila’s youth, she has seen more than she should have for her age, more than many others have seen. But she has not let it break her sweet character. And aside from that, I love how she sort of looks up to Jaron as an older brother type figure, because that is just so sweet. <3
My favorite characters are Jaron, Imogen, and Tobias!
1. Ani from “The Scourge” because she’s brave, smart, flawed but always wants to do the right thing, in fact, she strives to do good. She’s a little blind to what’s in front of her, and can sometimes miss the bigger picture but that’s what shows her human side.
2. Jaron/Sage from “The Ascendance Series”. I could spend days talking about how much I love Jaron as a character (and several additional hours on his sass) but in a few words: he’s quick on his feet, selfless (despite what others may try to convince him), and cares deeply for everyone, even those who have tried, on several occasions, to kill him. Its really his vulnerabilities (like his extreme lack of trust) that speak to me. It makes him so real.
3. Audra from “Words on Fire”. On her own she’s an incredible character, witty, fast-thinking, and intelligent. It was incredible to go on this literary journey with her as she discovers the power words can have on a person or society as a whole. Despite not understanding this idea at first, she still agrees to risk her life to deliver the books because its something her parents believed in. When she does discover the magic of words, she embraces this dangerous work because of what they can bring.
I feel like I’m picking favorites of my children, I love all of your characters! But alas a choice must be made…My three favorite characters are:
1) Gerta from A Night Divided
2) Sage/Jaron from the Ascendance series [no longer a trilogy 😉 ]
3) Aurelia from the Mark of the Thief trilogy

My three favorites (all from your Ascendance series) are Jaron, Mott, and Queen Erin. Jaron because he always tries to do what’s right and is willing to do anything for his kingdom, no matter how extreme. I also love his quick-witted and clever quips! I like Mott because of his loyalty and devotion to his king. I chose Erin because I love the stories about how she saw Jaron differently than everyone else. I especially liked the part where Conner said she wrote in her journal about him, and that she believed he was just like her.

I have to say read the Ascendance Trilogy in three days and I loved the characters, the plot, and everything, it keep me into it all the way. But when the fourth book–Captive Kingdom was released and I read it, i was pretty disappointed, Jaron was too predictable. Not a lot of the story made sense, and it was weird how Darius was Conner’s son. A lot of the stuff kind of seemed thrown in there to make a story.
It’s only my opinion, however.
But other than that I think your stories are amazing and engaging! keep up your awesome work and know that I am a huge fan!

1. Jaron. What can I say, he inspired so much of my early writing and was one of the first characters I wholeheartedly fell in love with.
2. Livia. She shows so much strength in the later books, and even in Mark of the Thief her courage is ever present.
3. Connor. He sidesteps the ‘power hungry villain’ archetype and possess some surprising depth *cough cough book 4 twists cough*

I’m beyond excited!!
My three favourite, although a tough decision would probably be
1. Jaron – His wit and skills to back make him very likeable and I look forward to the Shattered Castle to delve back into the world of Carthya
2. Erick – Very nice character who is not given enough credit. He took “Sage” the thief in to his band of thieves and although weary gave him a home and risked his life to bring him to the pirates. Upon hearing his death in book 4 I was upset that he had died.
3. Nicolas Calva – Narrowly beating out Roden I choose the protagonist of Mark of the thief because this book series is so great. Although having been a while since reading it I enjoyed seeing Nic beat out his opponents and his grandfather to acquire against all odds the Jupiter stone.

Jaron is an inspiring character who is full of life and is funny. He is not smart but he is however clever. Next is Nic is also a character that I admire. He is witty and has a smart tongue (like most of Jennifer Nielsen’s characters). I love how he rushes into situations without plans (well mostly stupid plans😁)and wants only freedom not power or glory. Last but definitely not least is radulf, Nic’s grandfather. At first he sought power and wealth(along with the simple plan to destroy one of the most powerful civilizations, Rome). Later on though he proves that he cares about his family. He is tough and endures a ton of pain yet he still stands strong(except when he is sitting. Then he is sitting strong I suppose). Sooooo yeah those are my favs and I hope I get picked bye!😁

Hi Mrs. Nielsen I have a question. Do Mott and Cregan have last names? It only calls them by their first names in the books. Also, what time period does the Ascendance Trilogy take place?
Servants in Carthya don’t use first names – that’s considered a privilege of someone with wealth and property of their own. The Ascendance books aren’t consistent with a strict timeline of our history, but they’d be roughly the 1400s.
