Oh man! I live five hours south, and school’s preventing me from going. Oh well. I hope I can go to another one.

Bummer – but school is very important. I’m sure there’ll be another opportunity in the future – no worries!

    Mrs. Nielsen –
Going to all these places is probably tiring. Do you get tired? When I travel, I always get jet lagged, and I sleep either to the afternoon, or to the middle of the night (depends on where I am).

I definitely get tired, but it’s also energizing getting to meet so many awesome kids from all over the country. I know I’m very lucky to have the opportunities that I do, so I just drink a lot of Diet Mtn Dew and crash into bed at night.

Do you think you will ever come to the East Coast, because if so, I would definitely go!

I do come sometimes, though usually at the request of a specific school, so I’m not really doing public events while there. Hopefully one day soon I’ll come to a bookstore near you!

Which is more important? School or reading?

    • Reply
      March 25, 2015, 5:23 am

Neither are most important. The most important thing is to find something that you are passionate about, something that you love enough to want to be your personal best at accomplishing it. I figure whatever that is, it’ll probably involve you reading and getting an education in order to achieve it.

It was a wonderful event at Kepler’s this evening. We found out just minutes before 7pm that the event would be tonight. We are huge fans of your work, Jennifer, and we could not miss the opportunity to see in person the great author whose writing we have been insatiable for! Your great talk about benefits of reading resounded for not only my 10 year old, but for me as well. Same for the letters you showed us. Your pearls of wisdom and encouragement made for a warmly memorable evening for me and my son. Also, my daughter thanks you for the journal message you wrote her! Have a great rest of time in the Bay Area!

Any chance you’ll be coming to Florida? Beaches, Disney world, Universal (the Harry Potter stuff is awesome)…

Ha! I’m sorry for the laugh, Ysabel, because this really isn’t funny, but I was just in Orlando last month. I think we might’ve passed each other somewhere along the way!

I must agree with the awesomeness of Harry Potter.
And I would ask you to come to Minnesota, but there’s not much there to offer. Snow, Mosquitos, Cold, Wind, Snow, Gray skies, and Snow. 🙂
It is actually really cool, though- literally.

Actually, I think I’ll be in Minneapolis in November, right before Thanksgiving. I don’t know if I’m doing any public events there, but it’ll be my first visit to the state, and I can’t wait!

Thank you for the great presentation at Kepler’s last evening. My sons were delighted when I brought home their books signed and personalized. However, I was dismayed yesterday to find that my normally outgoing personality took a swift trip to Iceland and left me alone with my blundering shyness. That being said, I left without asking you two questions. For me, do you do travel research once the idea of a story has taken shape or does travel inspire the story, particularly with ‘Mark of the Thief’? And for my sons, what books and/or authors do you love?

Been there with the shyness, Teri. I did travel to Rome for the research on this story. I had a sense of the layout of Rome and the look of each individual building, but couldn’t get a feel for the scale of the city, or the relationship of one building’s distance from another. For that, I needed to see the place live. But I don’t always travel for research. (That said, I think I should set a story in Hawaii or something, and then find a reason to need to travel there!)

Other books and authors I love that your sons might want to check out include The Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans, Janitors by Tyler Whitesides, and the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer.

Thanks again for coming last night!

I read Janitors as well, and Jen’s right – they’re great! I haven’t yet read Artemis Fowl, but have heard great things about it. Try some Margaret Peterson Haddix (Especially the Found series) for your boys if they haven’t already – she’s a great author (Not quite Jen, of course) with great books. Just a suggestion. : )

Margaret Peterson Haddix definitely is very good – all of her books are well worth the read! Thanks Paige!

    Hi Jennifer!
I met you at San Jose today. Brought my grandma and her Spanish book editions along 😉
You mentioned a proposal to Jaron and said “He’s 14! Let him grow up first!” Lol But, the series ended with his marriage. Was he still fourteen when he married Imogen?!

Yes, Rubi – hello! You’re so funny. Yes, the series did end with his marriage, but by then he was nearly 17. He turns 15 at almost the same time as he is crowned, and has six months of recovery after his broken leg. The war and all its events take at least a couple of months, and he and Imogen wait about a year before they marry.

I’ll be in Minneapolis this November, though I don’t know if I’ll be doing any public events. You can ask your English teacher if she’ll be going to the NCTE conference (National Council for Teachers of English). That’s why I’ll be there.

          • June 3, 2015, 4:05 pm

Oh my god that’s amazing! And my English teacher will be going, she said I could come with her if that’s alright with you, I really do want to go and meet you.
(But I have to finish some work and everything before school lets out for the summer :D)

          • June 4, 2015, 3:54 am

Yep, if your English teacher will be there, then that’s a great opportunity to come and meet a lot of great authors. I won’t know my schedule until a few weeks before NCTE, but please do come and say hello!
