Book 3 should be out next winter, and will be the final book of this series. However, I’m hard at work on a new series now, one that I think readers are really going to like!

Thank you, Farah – I’m actually not that good at book names. It usually takes me a very long time to think of them and my editor usually rejects the first fifty. Plot is easier for me now, but that’s after many years of learning to work story through my head. I hope you enjoy RISE OF THE WOLF!

WOW..that’s some cover. A lot of amazing books have covers that are less amazing than their content, and a lot of good covers are not done justice with the content of the story. With your books, however, we can gasp in amazement from both the cover and the actual story.

Thank you, Charlie! It’s not about Lupa, but is about one of the Gods who is connected to the wolf. The object on the cover is an armband, such as what the gladiators used to wear, except this one is in silver rather than leather.

Wait a second, you’ve already written the second book? Does it take a long time to correct any mistakes, or make a bunch of the books to sell, or something? It must not take you very long to write it! That’s VERY impressive. Right now, i’m trying to write a book, but since i’m only 13, i doubt i’ll be getting it published (besides the fact that it probably won’t be good). I love to write (mostly chapter books), and i’ve written 2 of them and A LOT of short stories (some for school).
Do you happen to have any advice for me? I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much! 😀

          June 4, 2015, 3:47 am

I have completed the second book, but that was after months of work on it. I’ll start writing book three a little later this summer, and then will begin editing it late this fall. That’s awesome that you’re writing too. No worries if this particular project doesn’t get published – some of my stories are for publishing and some are for learning to write better.

For advice – start reading books the way a writer might read them. Not just for the story, but start asking yourself how the writer handled things like characterization, emotion, description, etc. The better you understand how your favorite writers create their stories, the more you will know what to do for your story. Good luck!

I haven’t even written the third Mark of the Thief book yet – it’s just in outlining stage right now. But I’ll come up with a title this fall when I start writing it.

My next release will come out on August 25, called A NIGHT DIVIDED. This is a historical about a girl whose family is divided on the night the Berlin Wall goes up, and what she will attempt in order to reunite them. I hope you’ll check it out!

I met you in Mary Emily Bryan Middle School in Missouri and got the False Prince, Runaway King, and the Shadow Throne signed and I have LOVED your books and especially loved the Mark Of The Thief because I grew up with Percy Jackson and Heros Of Olympus ( which is Rome And Greek Mythology) so to have another Rome book was awesome
I thought this book was like the Percy Jackson series and a book called Shadow and Bone
    Thank you for your books

I can’t wait! I love your books (especially The Ascendance Trilogy) I’ve at least read them 3 times (all 3) You know you enjoy a certain authors books when you have a dream about it… (Yeah no joke, had a dream about A FOURTH book to the Ascendance Trilogy, this being a Prequel)The book revolves around Jaron/Sages brother, Darius. Darius saw through Conner’s devious plan, only to figure that it was too late, Conner already killed his family. Although, Darius’ fathers last words were “You must find Sage, your brother Sage!” And Darius goes on a quest to find Sage, but only to be killed by Conner at the end. (Supposed to have something to do with saving Arimanda, never really thought about the last part) 😀

OMG. that would be so cool!!!!!!!! what if that really did end up happening…:D 😉 it would also explain a little more about how sage/jaron, darius, and everybody else lived before jaron was “killed” by pirates on connor’s orders. i was kind of confused on that part. also maybe some more details about amarinda would be included. i wish it could happen. 🙂

i can’t wait to read it. i bet its going to be as great as all of your other books. my friend is addicted to the ascendance trilogy. i haven’t read the shadow throne or the runaway king yet, but i don’t think i will ever get a chance to without having my friend spoil it for me… today, we kept arguing about how King Jaron Artrolius Eckbert III’s name is pronounced. can you please settle the argument?
is it Jar-one or Jay-ron? also, who is your favorite character in both the ascendance trilogy and the mark of the theif series? thank you so much. 😀 ;D 😛 🙂

I pronounce it Jar (rhymes with bear) – on (un). In the books, I definitely love to write Jaron’s character – he’s such a brat and so unpredictable that he’s really fun. I also have a lot of love for Mott and Imogen, and a character you don’t meet until the second book, Fink. In Mark of the Thief, I admire Nic’s heart and desire to do the right thing, and Aurelia is a lot of fun to write since she is so tough.

Wow! it is just so cool to talk to you! I love the characters you come up with! My favorite from the ascendants trilogy is probably Imogen, and Nic, of course, from the Mark of The Thief! I also think its pretty awesome how Jaron can steal things so easily, and how you designed the plot as if Sage really wasn’t Jaron, that he himself believed it! It was a real twist and surprise! It made me gasp in shock! Thanks for all the hard work you put into these books, also! It is so kind of you to write stories for others entertainment! 😉 🙂 😀
        You are the best! 🙂

Hi! I was wondering if you could give me a description of the visual appearance of Jaron, Imogen, Roden, and Amarinda… I am planning to be one of them for Halloween. I finally finished the shadow throne. I just have to say… wow! Your books are so unpredictable! I used to be a HUGE Harry Potter geek, but those books were too predicatble… I like your books more than any other books right now. The Ascendance Trilogy is the best!

Aside from what’s in the books, I don’t think I could give you a better picture of what they might look like. One thought is to do a google image search for the character by name. For example, Imogen The False Prince. This will bring up images and you might find one there that you like. Thank you!

Well, I was about to write, but then realized that you were probably sick of all that. So, I won’t say that, and I will just say I loved the unpredictable plot! Most books make it so you can guess what happens next. Not in your books! But I just thought I’d let you know, in the early part of the book there is a grammatical mistake, you got its and it’s mixed up! But hey, everyone makes mistakes. I’m guessing the thing on the cover is like the bulla. Some kind of of thing that contains power. A gift from Diana god of the hunt to man on earth. Like on the first cover it showed the bulla and a Griffey on it, and there is the other one a bond or what ever it is with a wolf on it(could be Dana’s wolf). So their is my theory. Sorry if you have to delete.

Hi Jennifer Nelson, just wondering have you finished the second or third book. If not it would be really cool if you could add a few more Roman Gods or make a twist in the series and put Greek Gods! Can’t wait for your new book!
Thank you for reading my opinion 😅😀

Hi Mangle! The second book is completely finished and has been for several months now. It’s only waiting for the release date to arrive (and getting printed, distributed, and reviewed!). I’m currently writing the third book. That’s a cool suggestion to add in the Greek Gods, but in a way, I always have. The Romans pretty much took the Greek Gods and then gave them Roman names. Jupiter is Zeus. Diana is Artemis. Neptune is Poseidon, and so on. To call them by their Greek names would be out of sync with history because the Romans felt they had made their Gods a bit cooler than what the Greeks did. That said, I do appreciate your suggestions. I love that you’re thinking of possibilities for this series! Thank you.

I received this book, Mark of the Thief, and for the first time, read it in one day. Being a slow reader it of course surprised me to be capable of doing this between periods and at home, yet being captivated in this novel truly helped me gain a new understanding and respect towards literature – novels especially. Hey Jennifer, I love your writing! The Ascendance trilogy was amazing! I would like to say that your plots are very well written, and your characters are complex and wonderfully flawed. As a fan of good action, foreshadowing, and well placed sarcasm/sass, you’re doing a great job. I can’t wait for Rise of the Wolf. P.S. 😉 Well, Nic is definitely not out of trouble yet – in fact, his biggest challenges are still to come! But I hope you will like how the story ends – it’s my favorite ending of any book I’ve ever written. Thanks, Shane!

If you want to buy any of my signed books, you can do that through The King’s English. Just put your name in the notes on the ordering page so I know who to sign it to. The prices for each book are shown on that page.

If you just want a signed sticker from me that you can paste into a book you already have, that’s totally fine. Just send me your mailing address to jen@jennielsen.com

I hope every thing turns out fine for my three MOST interesting characters who would be Nic, Aurelia, and Livia. Maybe even Nic’s mother.

I was just wondering what made you decide to let the one guy marry Aurelia and not let nic marry her I mean when she said yes to him I felt so bad for nic so I wondered why you did it

It’s a tough scene, I know, but it’s the only way for Aurelia to save her life from the Mistress.

About how long do you think that the Mark of the Thief book 3 is going to be on Amazon after you publish it?

    • Reply
      May 2, 2016, 4:29 am

Mark of the Thief 3 will go up on Amazon about six months before it’s published, so anyone who wants to pre-order it will have plenty of time to do that. Thanks for asking!

Also what inspired you to make the mark of the thief series?

    • Reply
      May 3, 2016, 4:45 am

It came from the combination of two actual historical facts: First is the bulla, which Roman boys used to wear for good luck. Second is Julius Caesar’s claim to have come from the goddess Venus. I just asked the question, “What if Caesar was telling the truth?” And then, “What if his magic was kept in his bulla, which becomes lost after Caesar’s death?” The answers to those two questions became the foundation for Mark of the Thief.

Thanks for the response and I just have one more question which is why did you make crispus and Aurelia marry was there a specific reason or just to make character feelings for nic?

    • Reply
      May 4, 2016, 4:32 am

Aurelia and Crisps aren’t married. She only agreed to marry him, making them closer to what we would consider as engaged. And it was done because it was the only way Aurelia could save her life. But yes, that is hard on Nic, unfortunately.

I am a little disappointed that Aurelia had to marry Cripsus. That’s the part I probably hates the most, it was one of the reasons that made me cry, and I’m hoping something happens where Aurelia actually doesn’t marry Cripsus. Or I might of spelt his name wrong. These characters’ names can get a bit confusing sometimes!

    • Reply
      May 5, 2016, 3:49 am

She’s agreed to marry Crisps, sort of like what we would consider engaged. It is hard on Nic, but hopefully he has time in the next book to change her mind. Of course, she had to do it to save her life!

  • Reply
    May 7, 2016, 5:55 pm

So if Aurelia already agreed to marry Cripsus in front of the Mistriss or sorry, might of spelled that wrong but don’t feel like picking up the book and reading the ending, but anyway, wouldn’t that mean if since Aurelia married him, and he could help her save her life by marring him, wouldn’t Aurelia not be safe anymore and the Mistriss would do what ever was going to happen to Aurelia if she hadn’t of married Cripsus? So she wouldn’t ever be able to marry Nic? I mean, not unless Nic somehow became a Pretator, or sorry, keep spelling things wrong, I know it’s totally not spelled like that! I think I might be confusing you be spelling things incorrect.

      May 9, 2016, 2:46 pm

You’re right on all of this – as it currently stands, as long as Aurelia keeps her agreement to marry Crispus, she will be protected. So that either has to be the outcome of the story, or something else has to change. Which is going to be very difficult, no matter what.

But I said that, because it said in the book, that Preators are safe and so is the wife of a Preator.

I was super pleased by the Mark of Thief series and I’m glad you incorporated mythology into your books-especially Roman mythology. Thank you!

I’m not sure what advice I gave you before, but I am very glad your book is continuing to progress. That’s fantastic! For new advice…look at ways you can intensity the emotion of your book, to fill it with higher highs and lower lows. Those intense moments grab readers. You need to make those moments feel real, of course, but look for ways to intensify your writing. Good luck!

Was the emperor in the first Mark of the Thief a real emperor?

    • Reply
      August 22, 2017, 2:23 pm

Yes, Tacitus ruled from 275 – 276 AD, then Florianus (Book 2) for a few months, then Probus from 276 – 282. That’s partially the reason why I chose these years for the setting, because of the rapid (and suspicious) turnover of emperors. Moreover, Radulf is based on a military general named Ricimer who, like Radulf, could not ascend to be an emperor, but who seemed to hold more power than the emperors. Some historians suspect that Ricimer is connected to the frequent change in emperors.

Sage could leave Farthenwood any time he wants to. but he doesn’t leave, and it’s because of what happens to Latamer. That scared him, and humbled him, and also gave him an idea to avenge that moment.

Well…see the problem with this request, Alwin, is that a free pdf online of my writing is actually stealing my work. No different than videoing a movie in the theaters and then posting it on YouTube so that people don’t have to buy tickets to see the show. So I strongly suggest you visit your nearest library and if they don’t have a copy, ask them to get one in for you. And I hope you will, because RISE OF THE WOLF is pretty awesome!
