Wrath of the Storm (+ Winners)

First, here are the winners of last week’s HORIZON-themed contest:

** Larisa  ** Mary ** Emily C ** Sammy **

If that’s not you, don’t worry! Your past entries are still in the drawing and there are several giveaway weeks left! Keep trying!

Today’s news is BIG! Big like, I have received sooo many emails asking about this, that I am excited to finally be able to give an actual answer!

If you’ve been reading the MARK OF THE THIEF series, then you know the second book, RISE OF THE WOLF, ends with Nic in a rather precarious situation. That has prompted a number of “Please tell me there will be a third book!” emails.

So here’s the thing.

Yes, there will be a third book.

It will be released on January 31, 2017.

And the cover and title are below.

To enter this week’s drawing, all you need to do is tell me in the comments below what you think about the cover and title.

BONUS entry if you post the cover on your favorite social media (Facebook, Instagram, whatever – but you need to tag me in or tell me you’ve done it in comments), and/or send the following tweet:

See the cover and title for the 3rd MARK OF THE THIEF book by @nielsenwriter! Coming on 1/31/17, it’s called… https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30518478-wrath-of-the-storm

Wrath of the Storm cover

p.s. I promise to get back to SCOURGE updates soon! It’s less than 70 days from release! Seriously, I think you all will love this book, but it’s going to be a crazy few weeks of random but important news – I’m not even finished yet!

For the title, “Wrath of the Storm” must have something to do with the Jupiter Stone, because he’s the god of lightning and storms, etc. So maybe Nic does something to anger him? I dunno! I’m really excited for it!

Oh my gosh that is suuuuuuuuch an impressive cover! It would make me want to pick it up immediately if I saw it on a library shelf!
Wow, you are writing so many books at once, it must be exhausting… Do you just write on one story until you get writer’s block then change story, or do you allocate, say, an hour a day per book? Just wondering 😉

Cara, I’m almost always in every stage of a book’s production: outlining, writing, editing, and promoting – just with four different books. I don’t give equal time to each project each day – just respond to what needs the greatest attention at the time in order to move forward. It can be exhausting, but I’m lucky enough to be able to write books I’m genuinely passionate about, so it’s work I love.

Epic, badass, breathtaking, glorious, those are just some words that come to mind! I’m overwhelmed by all the emotions this gives me. The title is so promising, like its saying: be ready for one heck of an adventure! The font used is pretty cool, and the image itself while it could be considered as simple, works perfectly. It stands out, it’d magic!!

Also, what is your method of drawing the winners?

Is it completely random (like names in a hat), or is it chosen based on the answer?

OMG!! The cover is amazing! I am assuming that that is the Jupiter Stone, and the title is quite interesting. I can totally see how they both connect with the story. I am sooo excited for this last book!! I posted it on my Facebook account. I was wondering if you could give me advice on how not to give up on a story when writing it, Because I love to write, but usually at some point I forget about the story and don’t finish it. Any tips?

So excited to see the cover of book #3! Very eye-catching and an interesting contrast to book #2, which is sitting beside me waiting to be read (They have the cool/hot thing going on). The title is great – any time you can use the word “wrath” it is a good thing. I am trying to decide whether I should just read Rise of the Wolf very, very, slowly now, after that comment about the ending and having to wait until January 2017. Not sure I can wait to start it though!

Oh my! I love this civer and title. They both fit in nicely with the titles and covers of the previous books. The way that the fire/lava curls around the stag? shows much power, as it is the “Wrath of the Storm.” From the title, I hope to expect that there is much that the main character is going to be involved in, and that he may be the storm that the title talks about.

I think that the title and cover are both super creative! Can’t wait for The Scourge! I was talking to my mom about it earlier and we are both excited to read it! The Ascendance trilogy was by far our favorite trilogy that we have read and became a discussion topic for us. I loved how the trilogy was one that my family could enjoy. Great job on those books!

Better yet, I will tell you what my grade 5/6 class thought. My students loved it when we talked about it last week. They noticed a different animal in each cover, they noticed the flames first and thought the action was really going to heat up (sorry). They are trying to link the words wrath and storm to previous events in Rise of the Wolf (no spoilers for those who have yet to have the pleasure). Of course it looked really exciting to them and they are eager to read it. We were all very excited to notice that it is out in January. I had speculated that it might be April. Still a long time to go, but better than we thought.

The book cover for The False Prince is what first brought me to you. This is absolutely GORGEOUS! I haven’t ordered Rise of the Wolf yet but I will soon (this getting paid once a month is a trial sometimes). The stag so regal and I have a feeling the orange-red is perfect for what happens in this book. Thanks again for the opportunity to win! Good luck everyone! I hope you win!

Honestly, I haven’t read the Mark of the thief series but the book cover for me is emanating some sort of dark power maybe the book will be full of action scenes. But, overall it was great and awesome. I’ve been thinking what will be the deer in the book cover signifies with? I think the story will be about Diana the counterpart of Artemis in Greek Myth (Goddess of Hunt) because of the deer..Before scrolling down to this post, I also thought that the book title will be “wrath of the deer” hehe… Because of the deer in the middle part of the cover haha…

It’s an interesting cover. I like how your covers give hints about things in the book, especially the Mark of the Thief Trilogy. It’s fun trying to figure out why the cover is like it is. Why that color? Why that object? Are those rocks and is that mist? I look forward to finding out why there a stag on the cover. And why is it that pretty navy blue color? It also seems odd that the stag is coming out of a ball a fire.

This cover is pretty cool. It will look nice next to all of the other books in the series, plus the the books from The False Prince series. (I haven’t read the first books in a while, so keep that in mind)
So this cover looks pretty cool. In the first book, there was a fight in the arena, which involved fire, like the cover of the first book. The second book involved the room where the goddess was, which may have been cold and was stone.
So the third book has this background that looks, to me, like a black tree. Is that the setting? I can’t believe that we have to wait another 7 months to find out.
The objects on the cover are the objects in the books, so is this stag the Jupiter stone? It looks like it bursting out of the tree. Does he find it in a black tree? So many questions, and so few answers.
The title can have many meanings. He could be facing the wrath of Jupiter himself, or his enemies could be facing the wrath of Jupiter if Nic has the Jupiter Stone. Or his enemies could have it and Nic could die. I don’t know. YET.
Anyways, those are just my predictions. I also posted it on my instagram account @mackensie_pebble.

How many words does the False Prince have? I am an aspiring writer and was wondering how many words I should target for in my novels. Right now I have nearly 65,000 and I don’t know how much more I can add without it being a drag.

False Prince is around 72,000 words. But don’t worry too much about word count – it’s more important to tell the story the best way you can.

I really love the hidden details-the type that make you want to take a closer look (the patterns in the stone, the embers, the Greek watermarked pattern, and the writing. I’m guessing the theme of this cover is fire, and the font really helps bring that out by looking almost like an intricate stamp/burn. The deer looks so majestic, almost as if it is daring you to pick up the book. Another thing that catches my attention is the contrast of the black and red, it makes the cover pop. The cover is absolutely gorgeous.

I believe the cover to be quite alluring, as my eye is immediately drawn to the stag at the center of the cover, surrounded by what appears to be lightning. And I can only assume the stag is a representation of some sort of powerful entity. If I were to walk by, I would definitely pick this book up.
In addition, the title is also very enticing, as it offers an air of power and mytsery, relating back to the cover perfectly.

Of course, having read the first book (the second is on my TBR pile) I’m guessing that lightning has to do with the Jupiter Stone, but love that the image is both powerful and a bit secretive. 🙂

I don’t think I’ll be able to wait that long! I am like, screaming in my head right now! Ugh, how am I going to wait! The second book, Rise of the Wolf, had such a huge cliffhanger. I truly hate it. WHY?
Why did that have to happen? Anyway, anyone who hasn’t read the second book, or just all the books, I recommend reading them when the third book is out! Just so you don’t have to wait, like me!

Wow, WRATH OF THE STORM looks so awesome. It’s very mature-looking, like you’d find it on an adult fantasy shelf, which I think is cool. I’m very excited to see what happens in the book, too – and I think I can guess what must happen at some point, since the title literally mentions the dangerous fury of storms. Very scary for Nic!

Wow, I love the cover for Wrath of the Storm. I seriously wonder what font that is… Also, the title is definitely intriguing. It sounds rather ominous to me. But in a good, suspenseful way.

This is an amazing cover! To be quite honest, a lot of times, covers are hit or miss these days, and this is definitely a hit! Keep being amazing, I can’t wait to get my hands on it next year!

This may hurt my chances in the contest.

But i really can’t lie its a good cover but this is my least favorite of the three covers. I like composition of the cover but im not too fond of the deer portion of the cover. It doesnt seem to match the style of the other two covers which were gorgeous. I wish that deer was implemented and added in a more cohesive way like the wolf and Caila was in the other two covers.

I am curious was this cover done by a different artist??

I am really looking forward to reading this continuation though!! 🙂

(I hope my opinion didnt offend you!)

I’m in love with the cover! I love the way it looks like an eye, and yet you can’t help but get the feeling that you’re looking into the eye of a volcanic creature. Then there’s the stag right in the center of it all. Maybe a reference to the turmoil Nic is going through?

Anyway, super excited! I also managed to post this on Pinterest.

The dark background glorifies the electrifying center. I am way too excited about this book, and I already know it’ll be amazing, seeing as your book always are. Congrats to the winner! Are you going to be writing a new series, other than the Wrath Of the Storm one? BTW, I posted about it on Facebook.

The title of your book is great, it’s epic and foreshadows the turbulent times that await Nic. We’re guessing the deer is Diana’s symbol, though we thought the central image should have stayed consistent with the theme of the artifact being in the center. Since the bulla was on the first cover and was the central magical object of book one (with the malice replacing the bulla in book 2), we thought you could have the stone that Nic hid in the tree as the cover of book 3. But to make the stone more exciting, it could have runic etchings and engravings (possibly Diana’s arrow), or have lightening rippling across it since Jupiter is lord of the skies.

Thanks very much, Donovan! Of course – Aurelia is not married yet, but she has agreed to marry Crispus. But it will be an explosive sort of book, one I hope you’ll enjoy! No major new characters, though there are several minor ones that you’ll get to know better. Happy reading!

I think the title is amazing and the cover in my opinion really represents the stone because the deer on it looks like a powerful animal and if the Jupiter stone is the moats powerful it just sounds like they really go together

P.S you are my favorite author and i was wondering 2 thing is this book going to be a cliffhanger at the end and do have any idea what your next series will be about

Thanks, Zach. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Wrath of the Storm has a very definite ending, and in fact, is my favorite ending I’ve ever done with a book. Second, I do know what my next series will be about – it’s called “The Traitor’s Game” and I’ll begin talking about it in more detail soon!

Thanks, Isaac. I can give you these two hints: At the end, Nic recognizes a familiar tingling in his hand. And, magic can always sense the presence of other magic. So there is a reason that Radulf thinks things could get interesting…
