Reading Week! Jennifer Nielsen October 14, 2013

Reading Week!

Teen Read Week goes from Oct 13 – 19. Are you ready? Whether you’re a teen or not, here are five things you can do this week:

content_TeensTopTen_logo-_-yalsa_logo_330_right_1

1. Read. Well…duh, right?

2. Recommend a favorite book to your friend. If you’re encouraging others to read a great book, then peer pressure is great!

3. Go to the library, especially if your library is participating in the event.

4. Talk to your English teacher about Teen Read Week. Spread awareness!

5. Go HERE and vote for your favorite book off the list. (If The False Prince happens to be that book, then great, please vote – but there are other amazing ones too). And yes, in response to a question I’ve been asked a few times, you can vote more than once. The winners will be announced on October 22nd. To those who have already voted, thank you!

Also, in a completely unrelated thread, I’ve got a few emails asking what I’m doing right now. Here’s the answer: I’ve been traveling a lot, to Houston, Boise, and Denver in the last couple of weeks alone, and next month I will also be in Los Angeles and Boston (though there may not be any public events). I also recently got back from Rome where I did research for my next series.

The picture to your left is one I took from on top of the Colosseum looking down onto the Roman Forum – the center of all life in Ancient Rome. It may not look like much now, but two thousand years ago, this place was rockin’!

I’m now writing that new series, The Praetor War, with an escaped slave, stolen magic, and a fight to stop the fall of Ancient Rome. I’m about 20,000 words into my first draft.

The Shadow Throne - Front Cover

My next book to release is Infinity Ring 6: Behind Enemy Lines (more about that soon). The third book of the Ascendance Trilogy, The Shadow Throne, will release on February 25, 2014. Pre-order now from your favorite local bookstore.

There’s no movie news. Sorry. Also, there’s nothing yet I can tell you about The Shadow Throne.

And yes, I will have advance copies of The Shadow Throne available in December. There will be a giveaway contest on this blog. If you want a chance for a copy, be sure to check in then!

Thank you all for reading, following the blog, and for contacting me either via comments here, Facebook, email, or with snail mail. I appreciate you very much!

My birthday is on the 18th. Maybe I can vote as many times as I am old that day for The False Prince. 🙂 Are you going to write one of the books in the Spirit Animal series? Because I just got the first book today and was just wondering. Thanks!!! 🙂

Thanks Anna – happy birthday soon! I don’t think I”ll be doing the Spirit Animal series, but it is a wonderful one, and the other authors already signed on are fabulous.

I’m so excited for your new series! I love ancient Roman culture, mythology, history, and I take Latin at school. When I first heard about The Praetor War, I was thrilled. I can already tell it’s going to be awesome! I love the Ascendence Trilogy as well, and I can’t wait for The Shadow Throne to come out. I think it’s going to be really cool to see how everything comes together at the end.

So I read that you were writing another series and went straight to Goodreads. I have to wait till 2015! I can’t wait. Good luck on the writing. How was Rome btw?
On another subject, thanks for that list of writing tips. It’s quite useful.

Rome rocked – I loved it even more than I thought I would. And yeah, it’s 2015 until the release but the manuscript has to be finished next year, so I gotta get back to work…

20,000 words? *insert series of garbled exclamations* This is exciting! I eagerly wait for that, but first, I shall wait for The Shadow Throne.
You’re so full of suspense. ;P

I am going to die if I have to wait any longer for The Shadow Throne. Everyday I wait for it draws the life out of me. I LOVE JARON! Seriously, waiting for The Shadow Throne is painful.

The first two books of the Ascendence Trilogy were AMAZING! By far my favorite books I’ve ever read. I really can’t wait until the third book comes out! I’m obsessed with this series, and there are so many twists to the plot. You are an amazing author.

Thanks Joyce! It’s great to hear from you! LA is only for a school visit (and some research on a not-yet announced writing project I’m super excited about!). But keep yor fingers crossed that other trips to LA for other reasons will come in the future! 😉

Wow, that picture from Rome is amazing! It’s so cool that you got to travel to there for research.

I’m really interested in your new series. How many books do you think you’ll have in it, if you know at the moment?
    Good luck with your writing!

Oh I had a question for you. The setting of the Ascendance Trilogy seems to be set in a European-esque world,
but I was wondering if there was any specific places in Europe it would resemble or inspired you for the setting.
Also, have you ever thought of some other countries and areas in the Ascendance Trilogy world aside from the ones mentioned
    in the books?

I’m SO excited for The Shadow Throne! I can’t wait for it to be released.
Oh, giveaways in December huh? I guess it’s kinda your Christmas gift to some of your readers.

Katherine, The Praetor War is currently planned as a trilogy, but it’s still early in that process. Thanks for the good wishes – that’s always helpful!

The place I actually picture for the country of Carthya would look a lot like Northern California’s wine country – green and hilly. That would also describe a lot of places in Europe too.

And yes, consider the giveaway my Christmas gift. I wish I could have enough copies for everyone, but at least I’ll open it up for everyone to have a chance to win.

Ah, a trilogy. I look forward to reading it when it’s out. You’re welcome!

That area is beautiful. I can totally see it as the setting. It would actually be pretty cool if the movie could be filmed around there! Thank you for answering my question.

Awesome! I’ll be sure to enter. Can’t wait till December.

I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really want to read your new book! And I am pretty much dying, withering away at my keyboard as I wait is suspense for The Shadow Throne.
I love to read a lot and I like more complex books and so I loved The False Prince. I checked out The Runaway King and am going to reread it for the kazillionth time (okay, only the 5th or 6th-but still!).
How was Rome? I have always wanted to go to Rome or Athens. I like mythology and now that I’m almost done with the House Of Hades (I’ve only had it a few hours- I read very fast), I will have more waiting to do.
I also want to read the Infinity Ring book. It is coming out near my birthday and I can’t wait!
I want to read The Shadow Throne so much! I like to write cliffhangers, but being on the receiving end of one is PURE TORTURE!
Wait- the new book is 20,000 words long? How many pages is that exactly?
What is the contest? If it’s about The False Prince, I will win- I tried to bemorize the first page and have been known to recite passages under my breath while going to class.
This morning, I actually had to spend 10 minutes deciding what book character was my favorite, but I couldn’t chose Sage because his personality is kind of hard to explain and would’ve taken 10 minutes when I only had 6.43…
Anyways, after you’ve read my enormously long post, keep writing! Please! Before I die of suspence!!

PS. How do you write so many books at the same time?

Tori, I’m really (times eighteen) glad you’re enjoying the series! Don’t wither up and die though – both conditions will make reading The Shadow Throne really (times eighteen) hard.

The new book will probably be a little longer than The False Prince – I’m just that far on the first draft. Lots more to go.

The contest is to win an early copy of The Shadow Throne. I’ll announce details in December (once I think of them).

      p.s. To answer your question, I don’t sleep. 😉

They have some similar traits for sure, but are also different people. I really like the new kid though, and it’s fun to get to know him as I write.
